in theory, one is supposed to lightly oil the bore of a wooden horn, to keep the wood from swelling from the moisture. but the oil also swells the bore. and when the bore swells but the outside wood doesn't, the outside wood cracks.

to keep the outside wood from cracking, you need to start out oiling the outside wood and let that oil saturate all of the wood. then you can oil the bore without worrying about cracking. but in the process, you've made the wood so oily that it could never be glued, if it were to crack.
