Turn the Page - They Made Me Do It...I Swear!

"Turn the Page" has become somewhat of a meme on this forum. The 6-piece rock band I play with really wanted to add this to our set so I obliged since they're the ones who pay me.

Anyway, I have been a member here since I was a wee lad back in high school and have never posted any of my playing. I'd appreciate some comments/critiques/constructive criticism from the forum. Some things went very right and there's some other things that raised an eyebrow.

There's the intro (obviously) and then a solo at 3:20. I also do some riffing behind the singer during the tune.

Let me know what you think!

Sounding great from what I’m hearing! One of the bands im in plays this tune and Baker Street. It’s the only time I really play alto. Crowd doesn’t seem to care. I’m sure if a saxophonist was in the crowd they could tell I don’t play alto as much as I do tenor. I love music and performing live. As long as no one is dragging me out, it’s all good!

I'm also usually a tenor man and rarely play alto...but I adore my Martin Comm III. With a Kanee Ming (who would've guessed?) it's an absolute joy to play and I haven't been able to put it down the past few months.

I actually really like this tune - I wish we played Baker Street! It's nice to be able to indulge crowd requests.

Maybe Free Bird is next?

I’ve always been a fan of Alto Reed and the role he played with Bob Seger. He created iconic lines in rock music that are undeniable, and unmistakable.

You’ve obviously got a fire about you on that alto. A real screamer it is, and if I hadn’t spent so many decades listening to, and playing songs of that era, I might have considered it perfect. That said, I think you overplayed it for my personal taste. When I first worked Turn the Page up as a kid in the 70’s, I always believed AR was part of the fabric of that song, and not really to be showcased beyond the hook lick. This particular tune has a lot of depth in it’s message/feel and aside from the hook played by AR, Seger added no piano or guitar solos either. Those simple lines in the background of the song‘s message were what it needed.

What you played was great, but that enthusiasm and soloing skill might have been better placed in Old Time Rock & Roll, Nut Bush City Limits, or Katmandu. Some songs (like Turn the Page) shouldn’t be rewritten.

There’s something to be learned from the rock sax players that get more out of 5 notes than many of us can get out of 500.

All that said, I am very jealous of the many things your tone and phrase choices bring to the table.

@nico5999 Nice playing! A bit of a different take. Nothing wrong with that.
As a friendly suggestion study the history of the song. Know how Alto Reed (RIP12/2020) came up with the original riff. I did this song a year ago on a song of the month somewhere else. It completely changed my view of the song. This song has been a success for many years for reasons.
Thanks for posting !

Alto Reed was one of the more exiting rocknroll sax players and Seger and Silver Bullet were incredible live. I watched while Alto play a solo on a high wire that was above the band.

A very long time ago when I was still a kid I played in a rock band and played this solo countless times (love it by the way) and I use to crawl up on a 30 foot riser at one club we played at frequently and would play that solo under a spotlight with a wireless. After I was done I literally jumped off the riser to join the rest of the band. One time I lost my footing when I landed and fell on my Buffet S-1 alto which consequently got crushed. True story!
