i am new on SOTW. Have a YAS-62 brought in late 80', s/n is 0479xx, is it made in japan? so, please let me in the club

I read threads around said some models has "purple logo" but i don't see any purple markings on the bell area.

Can expert tell me more info about my 62 horn? I haven't "touch" it for almost 18years, surprisingly is still shinny and no sticky caps !
hi
the logo may have rubbed off in time, this is quite normal, is the yamaha logo on the neck purple or a purple/brown-ish (faded purple)?

hi IanSax
the logo looks brownish logo on neck. I had it purchased brandnew 20yrs ago, boxed and seal. although i play it through very limited time, but i definitely remember there is no purple color Yahmaha letters on the bell area.

is this a gerneration 1 model?

does the case have blue or pink (red) lining?
if it has engraved Yamaha on the bell and case red lining, than it is YAS-62II or YTS-62II (not purple logo)...

Look at the SN on the horn.

Immediately above that will be the model number.

If is says 62II, it's a series 2. If it says 62, it's a series 1.

Pretty easy.

The case really doesn't mean much as it may or may not be original to the horn, or it could be from an earlier run...etc (for example, my YBS 62 is pretty early in the run and came to me in a 61 style case which may or may not be the case the horn was shipped in).

I've got a set of Jim Schmidt foil pads for sale for a YAS62 listed in the for sale area. Just thought I'd post here and see if I incurred the blistering wrath of the forum administrator.

Why are you selling them?

I'm just always very curious to hear from anyone else who has ever used them - I put gold pads on my purple logo 0042xx tenor several years ago - have never found anyone else who has used them to compare notes with - pun not intended but should have been.

BTW ... I have a second old YTS 62 (0283xx) - with engraved logo but still old enough to not have rocker Bb - and I'm not convinced that there is any difference. I love my purple logo just because it's the horn I've been playing all these years ... but if I were buying one now, I wouldn't pay more for a purple logo over an engraved older one. But I don't much care for the new ones.

I didn't like the Yamaha enough to go to the trouble of repadding (I thought maybe this wasn't the thread where I should say that). The Yamaha was just not my thing and I'd gotten ahead of myself by getting the pad kit. I've decided to stay with horns that have clunky ergonomics and sketchy intonation.

Blaine,

No, that's the problem with the 62 kit. It fits that horn. Even other Yamaha altos use different size pads. JS has an exchange program, but I don't think it's free and I would be exchanging more than 80% of the pads in order to use them on a Chu, for instance. So these are going even though I was itching to try them. And my New Year's resolution was to get rid of stuff and projects, not get more stuff and projects. As with most New Year's resolutions, I'm not doing well.

I'm in. Just acquired two purple labels, a YAS 62 S/N 024XXX and a YTS 62 S/N 009XXX. Both in like new condition and they play as good as they look. They are replacing two Cannonball vintage reborn brute alto and tenor which are with my tech who is trying to sell them for me. The Yamaha's fit my hands/fingers better and do not weigh quite as much. Anyone have a guesstimate as to the year these horns were manufactured?

Well my YAS was bought new in 1986 serial number 033XXX

They hold up well cosmetically and mechanically in my experience.

Time to update my "membership", and happy to announce I've been busy having a successful YAMA-GAS attack over the past year! Adding to my already-cherished purple label 62 tenor 011XXX, found some great deals on a sweet YSS-62R 011XXX, a newer silver-plate 62 alto 364XXX and after years of saving, a YBS-62 036XXX. Yep, that one would be right off the showroom floor. Thanks for sharing my joy, fellow 62 lovers! Not bragging so much about acquiring them as I am about shopping the heck out of it and getting some screaming deals on horns that play perfectly for me. Photos to come... maybe if I can get out of the practice room long enough.

I might be 62 addicted as well.

Just bought a YSS 62, as I missed playing the soprano after selling my Yanagisawa S6 a couple of months ago. Dude, do I regret selling this horn, but I guess that the YSS will help me to get over it.

However, as I already play a YAS 62 and a YTS 62, it'll fit quite nicely.

Hi 62 Clubbers!
I have a YAS-62 in the post. Original version. I wish it were the purple logo but ... not quite.
Can somebody tell me the difference between the purple and non purple logo 62 original (one-piece keyguard) ?

A little (very) envious of your uber purps.

I just got one myself. A Purple label 62 Alto that has at least 99% Original Laquer and the original Pads!! Still sealing good. I am putting Kangaroos, and Reso-Tech over sized Resonators in, hopefully this weekend. This one is a keeper for me!!!!!
