Hello I am a senior in highschool looking for a teacher who is an acomplished saxophonist and doubler, well one who plays atleast college level music on saxophone and is a notible teacher. I've had many hit and misses with finding a good teacher in the Columbus area that are not clarinet doublers that just picked up the sax and are not at the college/class A(in Ohio that is college level material for highschool rankings) play ability. I post here because I am having no luck finding one that is with in a decent price range and availibility.

I had a good friend who taught in Columbus at Vann's music. His name was Al Goels. Unfortunately, he passed away about 10 years ago. Norris Turney, of the Duke Eliington orchestra, also lived in Columbus.

As far as current teachers in Columbus, I would ask one of the cats in the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. I don't know any of them, but if you go to their website, you might be able to track them down.

There are plenty in Columbus. All the others mentioned above plus Bryan Olsheski. I would recommend Michael Cox from CJO but he doesn't do much teaching outside of his students at Capital university. Too bad Chad Eby went to North Carolina too.

Hey I just looked at the jazz arts group website and my name is finally up there :)

if you've got big ears, study with gene. all the sound and soul you need is right there
Well said M' facta....I'd think GENE WALKER would be anyones best shot- with all due to the other guys. Gene had the THING that you need to hear and be in the room and dig. He's got SOUND and...soul. Get to him at all costs.
BTW- M'facta....I'll see you and L.S in Harlem next Saturday. for your hit.
It'll be fun to jam with you both; thanks for inviting me. I'll be there.

Byan Olsheksi's myspace page....send him a message, tell him i told ya where he is

as far as classical teachers are concerned, the absolute best HANDS DOWN in columbus is Jim Hill at osu hill.2@osu.edu
I think she just hit it on the head right there. Bryan and Jim. Bryan only has enough room for a few more though.

As far as Jim's teaching style I have no idea, but I've heard a lot of good things. Bryan is definetly bigger in jazz (he's one hell of a player) but he really knows his classical too.

i studied classical with jim hill while in high school from the 2nd half of my junior year through the 2 years i spent at osu. he's an amazing player and teacher. he had me learning Tableaux de Provence my senior year of high school, i went to contest and got a I. rating and i had not played classical at all previously. he really taught me how to practice those pieces efficiently. he can also play faster than almost anyone i've ever seen. he's very funny also, cool to be around.

Tharruf, you're thinking of the other Jim Hill, who is Jimmy Lee Hill, he also was my high school band director.....crazy eh? Jim L. Hill was a jazz player mostly, I'm not sure what he's up to now days.....back in the day there once was a mix up where they called him instead of osu's Jim Hill to play with the symphony....funny stuff

Well that IS funny...two guys with the same name in the same town and both Sax players...

The Jim Hill that I met subbed a Tenor book in the Big Band that I used to play in..more than once as I recall. I didn't really get to know him very well but apparently the brain cell with his name remains.

His son (John) was a regular player with us for awhile. He was a good player too. It's been a long time since I have seen him...I'll bet at least 10 years.
