I just rented my alto sax yesterday and when i tried blowing on the mouthpiece no sound came out. i tried replacing the reed and moisting it too but still no sound besides a brief uncomfortable noise/ i don't think its the sax cause i have this problem with it unscrewed from the saxophone and on it. any idea whats wrong with it? a couple things i did was place the reed just slightly over the mouthpiece cause i thought thats what you were supposed to do and i actually wettened the hard end of the reed that your mouth doesn't touch instead of the thin end. could that be it? I just started Btw, still learning.

I would suggest you get a teacher, ie a real person. Asking the Internet such questions may not get you very far, it's way better to have a real person in the room who can see you and hear you. Having said that there are some guides with videos on how to assemble your instrument and get the first note, e.g.

I entirely agree with Pete, a teacher is essential to put you on the right track.

Despite what a lot of people think, most wind instruments (with the only exception perhaps, of the recorder) require an embouchure and this is not an intuitive process for most people and the most part of it.

In the meantime, while you look for a teacher and before you start destroying expensive and innocent reeds, watch some instructional youtube videos, remember that the early statges are the ones where you are most likely to develop bad habits which, if left as they are, are bound to be causing problems down the line!

just two videos randomly chosen on the subject of embouchure

Congratulations! A brief uncomfortable noise probably describes the first sound all of us made on a saxophone! Lessons are the probable best next step but if you decide to have a go at it on your own - persevere.

Good Luck!
