Sadly, I never heard of him until lately when I saw a link posted here to a Youtube recording of him. That guy can definitely blow. I absolutely love his sound and playing. I'd love to hear more about what's he doing too.

I first became aware of Pete King when I was age 15, listening to Maynard Ferguson Big Band albums. Peter King played on MR Horn One and MF Horn Two. He took some great solos on those records and played solid lead alto.
Have since heard some of King's solo projects - all great stuff. This guy is the real deal. He's out of the Woods-Cannonball-Bird camp, but he has his own sound and approach. That video on You-Tube of Mr. King playing "Lush Life" says it all.

 

I've seen Pete play once, and he is definitely world class without a doubt.

Yeah, that Lush Life recording makes me fall in love with the sax all over again every time I watch it.

 

By the way, if you pay to join Phil Wood's 'Patrons Club'' at philwoods.com then you can hear many live recordings incuding one from the Glasgow Jazz Festival 1995. This features Phil playing with Peter King's Quintet-Good Stuff.

One of the best gigs I've been to was in London. It was Peter playing with Bob Martin-a great American alto player who lives in London. Bob was with Buddy's band for a long time (late 60's/70's) and sounds more like Phil than anyone else I've ever heard-Bob also has the most awesome, awesome chops imagineable. I've played with Bob a lot over the years (and studied with him) so it was nice hanging out with him and Peter after the gig-some great stories. They both shone big-time that night. (Jim Watson was burning on piano too).

Same here! Him, Brian Smith, Peter Jackson...that was a great band!

No, the partner at Ronnie Scotts was his namesake Pete King. That's why he's always uses the 'r' and is known as Peter King. Confusingly, Pete King also plays saxophone.
