does anyone know where i can buy the Kessler Custom Deluxe Tenor Sax - Black with Silver Keys online???
Uh . . . maybe click on the banner ad at the top of the page? Then pick up the phone and dial the number they list. Chances are you'll talk to Mr. Dave Kessler himself. A REALLY nice guy, even to those of us that ended up not buying there.

Every once in a while they have something on eBay. Right now I think they only have a mouthpiece and a bari sax.

Otherwise, yeah, hit the link at the top of the page or call. Talk to Chuck or Dave Kessler. Excellent service and advice.

Anon, I thnk you have to go directly to Kessler. You will not be disappointed, He and his people will give you straight scoop. I bought two horns from him and if necessary will do it agin. Bruce Brennan

I own a Kessler Custom Tenor sax that I bought about a year ago. I'm happy with it, in fact it's my back up horn of choice at the moment. There are a few little things I could nitpick about but they don't matter to much to me. If you want to hear what I sound like on this horn go HERE and check out this YouTube clip. So if you're looking for a very good horn for a decent price, definitely check out the Kessler Custom...CM

I wasn't talking about the sound. By 'fit and finish' I mean cosmetic and alignment
issue, as in

http://www.engineering-dictionary.org/Fit_and_finish

For example, in the inexpensive Solist, most of the blued pins are bent more, and the
pads look less symmetrical, than on better horns. The Solist logo was stamped rather
than engraved and the stamp is visible inside the bell. That kind of thing. The horn
still plays well though, and the OL7Pro mouthpiece I got with it is my favorite
tenor mpc.

The Unison was nice, but I two key pearls fell out and I had to reglue. They needed
to use better glue.

The Yanagisawa horns are nearly perfect with respect to fit and finish. The lacquer
comes off easier than the Yamaha's I've seen, but I don't care.

The reason I don't talk about sound that much is that I don't find that the horn matters
that much. I sound much like me on most horns I play. Mouthpiece and reed changes
do more to my sound than horn changes. Ease of playing is more important; if some
notes are stuffy or some transitions more difficult for me then I think that lowers the
value of the horn.

Dave is a straight shooter, so if he says the Custom is comparable to a YTS62, that
sounds like a heck of a horn. Or was he talking about the Custom Handmade?
I meant to reply to this quite awhile ago but cannot for the life of me figure out how I missed it.

Yes, our entire Kessler Custom line is built to a MUCH higher fit and finish quality than the Solist models were. Granted, the logos are still stamped (but so are Selmer Paris & Yanagisawa - Keilwerth engraves their logo).

We really have 2 fit and finish levels.

Student/Standard/Deluxe - These models all share the same manufacturing techniques. They are a noticeable level above the Solist.
Handmade - This is done to a level that most would consider on par with the best out there (big 4). I personally think that they are a fraction of a hair below the Yanagisawa in this level, but so close that most cannot tell the fit and finish difference. Our handmade models are built by a total of only 4 technicians at the factory. They are a true Handmade horn and when people play them, they are completely flabbergasted at the level of horn for their money.

Most people play our Standard model and prefer it over the 62. Obvioiusly though, this is a personal preference issue. I will say that I feel our Standard level horn is built very close to the same level as the 62.

Hope this helps.

I'll chime in here about the Kessler saxes. First, some kudos:

1- To Dave Kessler for bringing a great quality, affordable horn to the market. I have the Kessler Custom Deluxe Tenor and I love this sax. Great ergonomics, it plays in tune, and is an excellent value for the money.

2- Mega kudos to chayjazz for his excellent showcasing of the Kessler tenor on "Skylark". Great sound and playing man!

I have had the Kessler for about 2 years now (lucky enough to get one second hand in nearly new condition). I bought it as a backup horn, but have been playing it as my "main axe" since I took it out of the case. You can hear the sound I get with this tenor on Youtube at:

Thanks again to the Kesslers for putting out a great line of saxes! I wholeheartedly recommend them as a great primary or backup horn!

Beautiful playing, man. Just beautiful. Thanks for giving me something pure to start my day with.

That was very, very nice! Enjoyed it immensely!

Hey! I have a three year old Kessler Custom Deluxe tenor! In about, say, ten, or fifteen years of constant shedding, I'll be able to blow a few notes like you guys!

Dang! You guys are making it patently obvious that it's 10% equipment and ~90% yayhoo stuck on the back of the mouthpiece!!!! I gots me some work to be doing don't ya know!

Ahh, but it does give me something to shoot for! I'm better today than I was a month ago! (at least my sight reading is, anyways.)

Thanks so much guys! We are all works in progress. So much wonderful music....so little time! :)

Great recording Randy. Glad to hear that you are having fun with you sax. Do you have an MP3 version of the tune that I could give to people who insist on a sound clip? I never recommend people using them as a basis on judging an instrument as it doesnt really help them, but some dont want to listen to my thoughts on that and insist on listening to audio clips.

Hi Dave! Thanks so much for the encouraging words! I am indeed very happy and proud to be playing the Kessler sax! Here are two clips I did w/the Kessler Custom Deluxe Tenor:

Funny Valentine is here:
http://www.4shared.com/audio/VtgsbpRR/Funny_Valentine_-_Randy_Sherwo.html

And here's a clip of "No Ordinary Love" which I did just a day after I received the horn.
http://www.4shared.com/audio/R4IPRfbw/No_Ordinary_Love_-_Randy_Sherw.html

I have to say that the character of the sound impressed me immediately. Til then, my regular axe had been a King Super 20 which I picked up when a music major buddy dropped out of college back in 1969 ($150!). Those were the days I guess! At any rate, haven't played the Super 20 too much since getting the Kessler. I still love the King sound too, but since my playing time's limited, I have just stuck w/the Kessler horn. Thanks again for putting out a great line of saxes!

Good stuff Randy. What mouthpiece are you playing on in the clips? Do you have a link that you would like associated with the clips?

Hi Dave - sure! You can direct anyone interested in hearing more of my sound using the Kessler Custom Deluxe tenor to:

www.youtube.com/saxyguydestin

or

www.saxyguy.com

Every one of the (tenor sax) clips on my web site and YouTube were performed on the Kessler horn. My mouthpiece is a Couf Artist J6*R, which has a molded-in baffle.

Thanks again for the kind words and for spearheading development of a great line of horns!

You are awesome Randy !!! I really enjoyed your music. I was at Kessler Music 2 weeks ago when I was in Vegas with my family . I always stop in when I am there. I played one of their horns and liked it better than other horns coming from the big four. I can't see the logic in buying a horn from one of the big four for 3 times as much when you can get a Kessler or similar horn that plays just as good if not better for a fraction of the cost.

Hi Guys! Thanks so much for the kind words! Eric, I have to agree with you on the horns and horn prices. I have a couple "high end" horns which are now near antiques. Due in part to their value, I find myself happy to play the Kessler on all my tenor jobs. I can also say that OldSaxer is a gentleman himself and another great source of info on the Taiwanese horns! Thanks Dan for the kind words and I am also elated with w/my Maxtones deal!

Not that my input will convince anyone, but I have more of the same praise to heap on the Kessler horns. I had a Custom in Matte finish that I purchased used (here, I believe) and used it as a back-up horn for awhile, before NH came to it's senses and outlawed smoking in bars. One they did that, I didn't have as much need for a back-up. At that point I left the Kessler in my classroom for the days the students would throw a jam together after school. I eventually felt bad for the horn (and found a Silver Sonic I just *had* to have because I'm a complete tool), and sold it to a friend who was looking for a tenor for her son as he entered Jazz Band. The Kessler mouthpiece was a bit much for him, but they were able to find something closer to the legit pieces he had been playing and he's enjoying the horn so much that he's made all-state every year since starting to play (this means he's practicing, more kudos for the horn, IMO). I would not hesitate to snag another if I needed a quality back-up (my main tenor is a silver-plated key VI), and I'm actually considering one of the Solist baris I'm seeing on the site as a back-up to me 141XXX VI. Dave, are we apt to see a thread on that one, soon?
