Martial Solal was Jean-Charles Richard's father-in-law for whom he composed a concerto for saxophone.

I didn't know that, thanks for posting.

Here's an early video of Solal with his trio, with an added bonus of a quick view of Johnny Griffin in the opening shot. Solal sounds to me kind of like Art Tatum with a more modern sensibility.

one of the most technically advanced pianists.
He really appreciated Art Tatum, indeed, and Lennie Tristano, Phineas Newborn, Herbie Nichols,Hampton Hawes, Brad Meldau...

Alongside his Own orchestras, he worked with Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grapelly, Sydney Bechet, Don Byas, Lucky Thompson, Stan Getz, Wes Montgomery, Clark Terry, Hampton Hawes, Johnny Griffin, Lee Konitz, Gary Peacock, Paul Motian, Dave Liebman…

i ‘m not fan of his style but Never Forget one of his thoughts about improvisation :

« you need to control everything you play at home and Forget everything on stage » !
