Not sure if this has been brought up. Do you guys buy reeds in bulk? If so where? Any particular website? Thanks!

I tend to buy a few boxes at a time from 1stopclarinet.com - its nearly half the price of buying them from the UK that way.

I'd hardly call it bulk buying though - I wouldn't mind buying a 100 reeds from a wholesaler though if I could find one

I only buy reeds one box at a time, when needed.
Reeds loose their strength with age.
I once put away a box of Vandoren #3 soprano reeds in a drawer for 6 or 7 years and when I played them they were the same as #2.5's.

Reeds may lose their strength with age, but damn they play so much better!
If you intend on long term storage, just buy a half strength harder. Vintage Rico Royal 4's blow great for me on alto, but I can only play new 3.5's or V16 3's.
I buy a lot of reeds of eBay, believe it or not- you can get some awesome deals- just today I bought 6 boxes of Rico wood grain clarinet reeds (#4's) -150 reeds all up- for $100!!! I normally play Vandoren Classique 3's, so these are perfect.
Standard ricos (before the D'addario buyout- with the tissue paper packing) play great with a bit of time.
If ebay's not your thing, try saxplus.com
Good luck with any reed!

Where's the proof that reeds lose strenght with age?

Once the moisture content of the reed has stabilized a brand new reed should be stable for years and years providing it's stored properly.

Myself I buy in bulk. I have 50 boxes of RJS tenor reeds in 3M, 3H, 4S and about 20 boxes of alto and soprano RJS reeds.

My source shall remain a secret, but I save good money and free shipping.

yeah discount reed a good place to order from. I got 2 boxes of V16 tenors just the other week. Out of the first box 2 were really good, 1 was a dud, and 2 were just ok. But so far out of the 2nd box the first 2 both play great. One so good I stuck it away as a possible candidate for my gig on sat afternoon, and then again sat night. I just don't have problems with reeds like the rest of you seem to. I do sometimes end up playing one thats a little too hard because I haven't spent time breaking them in, but like 80 percent seem to be good reeds at least for me.

Every once in awhile there is a really special reed that just seems perfect. If you people expect every reed to play like that I think you are being unrealistic. Who knows what factors play into a reed seeming like it's perfect. It could be that ligature tightness, reed position, your lip moisture level all play into it. I don't know man, it just seems people are paranoid about reeds.

having ranted on I will give another thumbs up to discount reed company. Never had an order messed up in about 5 tries now. I think they do pretty good work there and deserve business.
