I've been jamming a lot with my dad lately, who plays piano. He's been look for albums that are just sax and piano no bass or drums. Can anyone suggest any?

They also did one from the 70's called Forgotten Fantasies, on A+M, good luck finding that on vinyl, let alone CD.
Richie did one with George Coleman called Convergence
How about the Herbie/Wayne record +1?
Steve Lacy and Gil Evans did one right before Gil died called Paris Blues
A few tunes from that Stan Getz/Jimmy Rowles record The Peacocks
1 tune from Hal Galper's Reach Out called I'll Never Stop Loving You, it's just him and Brecker.

George Coleman and Tete Montoliu: Dynamic Duo.

Oh yeah, baby!

There are a few Desmond-Brubeck things: for example, "1975: The Duets." Lovely.

The previously mentioned Potter-Werner duo is also wonderful.

As long as you can play like Coleman, Potter, or Desmond, and your dad like Tete, Brubeck, or Werner, you guys are all set! (And even if not, it still sounds like a lot of fun...)

"People Time" with Kenny Barron and Stan Getz. It's a 2 CD set which I think they recorded shortly before Stan Getz died. I listen to it often and am amazed each time each time I hear it. It's definitely one of my "desert island" cds.

Playing with just piano can be a lot of fun.

One album I have and particularly enjoy is called "Art of the Duo Gunther Klatt & Aki Takase play Ballads of Duke Ellington". I really like the tenor player, he kind of reminds me of Coltrane a little.

Another, more fun one is Skinny Williams and Erwin Helfer "St. James Infirmary". This one is all boogie-woogie type stuff. Skinny Williams is a Chicago pro who is an absolute beast, but he plays really laid back in this cd.

Aki Takase is a fantastic piano player who I got to play with in Berlin. The Duo records she did with Rudi Mahal (Duet for Eric Dolphy), who's a super badass bass clarinetist, and Dave Murry (Blue Monk) are unbelievable.

I think you could find some good songs for your father-son duet, from any of the albums where Cannonball and Bill Evans played together. These albums as recorded have other players (bass, drums) but several of the songs could work with just piano and sax. The first two songs on Adderley's "Know What I Mean" LP ("Waltz for Debby" and "Goodbye") could work. "Flamenco Sketches" from the "Kind of Blue" LP would be something I would want to try.

PERK WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST BARI SAX PLAYERS EVER. Bar none, just ask Jennifer Hall or any LA saxophone player. Speaking of Jennifer- she goT a rare CD with Alexander Caseli duo that she gave me-great stuff. One cool lady too.

There's also a CD with Don Menza and Stazz on the same label- lets not forget the Bud Shank- Bill Mays plays Bill Evans.

Oh- How about PHIL WOODS " Flowers For Hodges " on Concord?? Phil also plays bass clarinet and stuff on this. GREAT TUNES!!!

There are two great Horace Parlan and Archie Shepp duet LP's from the 70's or so.
Even better IMHO the Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) and Shepp.
Another is a live duo of Abdullah Ibrahim and Carlos Ward.
There are a few Beirach and Liebman Duos, I really like Omerta.
Jan Garbarek and Art Lande years ago did a nice duo Red Lanta, the only recording of Garbarek on bass sax that I know of.

T
beautiful record, 'Live At Sweet Basil Vol 1' on Black Hawk. I don't believe that there was ever a volume 2 unfortunately.

Another vote for 'People Time' and something in an older vein, but worth searching out is 'Crazy Legs & Friday Strut' by Jay McShann & Buddy Tate.
