Here are some that I sometimes use:

Pop Goes the Weasel
Marry Had A Little Lamb
Take Five melody (sometimes over D- blues)
Wedding Song (not sure name of it though)

What are some others that are good to quote?

I'll sometimes toss in "Popeye the Sailor Man" to see if anyone's paying attention.

Once, on a Bossa Nova gig, everytime the head started with a major 7 (which, it turns out is, like, everything: Summer Samba, Triste, Voce...), I'd quote "Girl from Ipanema". The guitarist said it was funny the first two times....

pink panther.

We were playing a song "Comin Home Baby" where our two flutists got to battle it out for awhile. After our lead flutist soloed for two choruses.........the 2nd flutist came in with "The Pink Panther" and won the crowd and the band over. It was definitely the definitive "cool" moment in the concert.

This was followed by a circus theme melody.....Splankey......and various other little quotes that made her interesting solo's all the more lovable.

I say if it strikes your fancy, go for it. It can be especially crowd pleasing.

Also not a big fan of quoting; to me it's akin to selling out. But hey, Mary Had a Little Lamb on the drumset (toms) is always a winner 8) Drummer in our band two years ago did that, got the whole band hooting and hollering during his solo, and then the crowd. Good times!

Razzy: Selling out? That seems really harsh, considering that quoting is something that nearly every (if not every) great jazz musician has done. Any more words on that?

Personally, if it helps to bring people into the music, it's a good thing. At least, that's my opinion on the matter. Besides, if you're playing So What, why not mix things up a bit by playing a bit of Summertime, or Impressions, or maybe even Mr. PC (transposed up a whole step, obviously)?

Theme from the Perry Mason works well for me on Summertime -
the guys in the band broke up when I (lawyer/musician) did it the first time.
DD, As someone who works in the judiciary that Cracks me up! Now you have to learn the themes other lawyer shows, let's see, there's Matlock, (No one would probably remember Owen Marshall,Attorney at Law), LA Law...and the rest

I've heard Phil Woods quote Harlem Nocturne and the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey, in the same evening.

How about quoting Mark Snow's wife's whistling on the X-Files theme? (now I'm gettin silly.)

When I am not watching, "Stranger in Paradise" creeps into my solos. I have been known to try for the theme tune to "Housewives' Choice" - a British radio show from the 1950s. You could try the opening bars from "Surrey with the Fringe on Top", but keep that motif going higher and higher until everyone has seen the joke or it turns into a freeform gig, whichever comes sooner :?
