What’s a decent price on a Model 22 soprano in the 5XXX serial number range?

And how do these compare to a Mark VI? Weekend warrior, and maybe community band use.

I have no direct experience, however almost any Selmer has attached to it "collector value" that doesn't always reflect it's value as a good playing instrument. Initially it was only the VI tenors and altos that attracted high prices and the VI sopranos didn't share the same high prices. A good reason for that was because the VI sopranos weren't a lot better than others. However collectors have been (in the last 5 years) paying higher prices. This is now reflecting on other earlier models. I doubt that the 22 is better than any of the other sopranos from the same era, and have heard reports (not my experience) of their being not as good as Bueschers, Kings, Martins, etc.

All the earlier sopranos have more difficult ergonomics and less "dialed in" intonation. However they potentially have a softer mellower tone (depending on the mouthpiece you use). The VI soprano will have better ergonomics and better intonation and a much higher price tag.

Both horns are old, so can have a lot of problems in terms of wear that requires some attention. An old horn can become very expensive if a lot of rebuilding is required. Many of the newer Chinese and Taiwanese horns are inexpensive and certainly good enough for community band playing. They won't be worth much second hand. Play testing is best if you are somewhere that has instruments for sale that can be compared. Otherwise you need to have a good "return policy" to fall back on.
