Hi guys,
I'm new here. I want to start playing saxophone and I like tenor so I'm going for one. There is a Musica Steyr Tenor in good working condition with no ding or dent, for the price of 150 included a Hans Zinner mouthpiece. Is it a good price for a good saxophone? Is Steyr a good brand?

I have no knowledge of that brand. But if it is actually in good playing condition (good pads, no leaks - you can't tell by looking at it), $150 is an incredibly cheap price for a tenor sax. It is best if you can have a tech or experienced player check it out.

Steyr is a place in Austria. It is known for some historically quite high quality automotive products, military vehicles, and even some very good bicycles (Daimler, Puch). Beyond that, I've never heard of this brand of saxophone, but... if it is made in Steyr, Austria, it is probably pretty good quality and I agree that anything decent for $150 or 150 Euro is a great deal. What do you have to lose? Then again, Musica Steyr may be the name of a musical instrument dealer, and the horn is made in China or something, so be cautious.

I had a bari sax from Musica Steyr, it was a sort of tank built quality and had a huge sound, bigger than my Jupiter. They really are undervalued horns and they will get you far if in right order.

Info that I'm aware is that they are Amati stencils to some extent.

Go for it and be sure to take it to a technician and enjoy!

They are indeed Amati made and the only difference is the bell to body brace (in the tenor), the pants guard and the low notes guard ( nicer engraved) and the nicer art deco engraving on the bell. They are not MADE in Steyr but they were imported there by an Austrian Importer who imports brass and woodwinds. The brass instruments should be made by B&S.

The Identical Amati is normally cheaper ( on account of the Austria punched stamp which is NOT to be confused with a stamp saying " Made in Austria" it doesn't say Made because it isn't made there! )

They are nice, simple saxophones and play well.

Hi
Thanks for all your comments, I appreciate all your help and am glad that I found this wonderful community. Here is a little update.
Unfortunately I didnt know the difference between tenor and alto, and the seller was not sincere, so I bought a Steyr alto for 150 which I thought was tenor. However someone wants it so I sold him. Luckily one girl wants to give up sax so I bought this Steyr tenor from her mother. It has already checked and tuned up so I just take it and play it. I also did myself a favour and bought Yanagisawa mouthpiece and it is better than the no name mouthpiece it comes with.

Hi,
I bought the wrong old because I am a noob and seller lied to me, so I did buy an alto, but then I sold it and bought this tenor. It looks like ATS 61 to me. Sound is good, I did myself a favour and bought a Yani 5 mouthpiece, which helps the sound a lot.
Thanks a lot for your help everyone. I'm glad I found this community and I'm sure I will return again.
