Hey SOTW friends! Wanted to share this! I recently hosted Boney James for a live masterclass, and the full replay is now available to watch for free on YouTube.

In this conversation, we covered his current saxophone setup, how he practices both at home and on the road, the influences that shaped his sound, his journey as a bandleader, stories from the road, and he even picked up the horn to demonstrate what he’s been working on.

Thought I would share this with the community! Would love to hear what you think once you watch — what part of Boney’s story or approach resonated most with you?

Hope you enjoy!

FANTASTIC INTERVIEW!

Boney is the best!
Such a super kind and gentle human being and a wonderful player!!!
He did his last two albums on my 10MFAN mouthpieces and not long ago, I sold him that beautiful Link that he mentioned in the video. Brian Powell had done the reface on it and it was very beautiful and warm sounding. Boney got it and has been enjoying it ever since. Boney goes through many stages, enjoying different pieces and even though he sounds great on everything, he’s always checking out different stuff.
I sold him Guardala King metal mouthpieces decades ago, and he’s gone all around the world with gear since then. 😁🎷😁
He was on my Chameleon model and made his second to last album on that, and then he wanted a little warmer…. so he went to my Robusto Hr for his last album. He then added the Robusto metal to his arsenal and has enjoyed that.
He just keeps going warmer because that’s what his ears are hearing at the moment.
So I’m glad he’s loving the Link that I sold him and I just love listening to him on anything he is playing on.
He’s all about the passion!
I loved him when he was using his West Coast Sax mouthpiece and his Drake mouthpiece and it’s been fun watching his change to warmer and warmer.
I think the interview was really fun and you did a great job with it! It’s great to hear what people are using and their concepts, and all of that. I thought you did a fantastic job getting a lot of information from him. (How he practices and what reeds he likes and necks he likes and all of that).

I really look forward to more of your interviews!
🎷❤🎷❤

……and by the way, if you haven’t heard Jeff play, he is a monster player!

That's incredible! Thanks so much for dropping all this knowlege about how Boney's gear has evolved and your expertise! He is so complemetary about all your pieces and your help. Do you know what the tip opening is on his current Link? I forgot to ask and I noticed people are asking in the comments on the YouTube video. Thanks again for all you do!
