I had used Musescore on another computer that had an old version, so I never realised that to install it, in 2024, you need to be extra careful not to install the wrong thing.
Looking for a notation software this month, I was reading what has been written here about "Musescore", because people simply refer to it as "Musescore".
In 2024, there are three different things that can be called Musescore:
1. Musescore.com, which is a library of downloadable scores, some free (uoloaded by users who transcribed) and some for purchase (official transcription, Hal Leonard books, etc). If you install the application "Musescore" from Musescore.com, you will NOT have a notation software. BTW they lie about the fact that, because they now own Hal Leonard, you can "purchase scores for 0.015c". Hal Leonard Scores are $6 each song.
2. musescore.org, which USES A DIFFERENT LOGO. You have to log in separately, and the log in is from a website called Musescore.org
3. MuseScore Studio 4.4.3, which is the free notation software, which is an app of MuseHub.
To avoid confusion, it is best to refer to the notation software by its proper name MUSESCORE STUDIO
This can be misleading, as there are apparently NO bridges or connections between these Musescore websites and applications. If you download a score on the Musescore application, you cannot transpose it or edit it like you would on MuseScore Studio.
I think this is a mess, and it's deceptive.
The apps logos, opened side by side on my Mac:
