Hey, it's gotta be a good match for all those killer and monster Mark VI's. Seems like every add for a Mark VI has those words.

Ah, but did Eric G infuse some Killer Steroids of his own into your reference piece (more efficient curve, flatter table, etc...)? What makes that one "normal"? A refaced Florida Link IMO is by no means normal compared to a modern, off the shelf, Babbitt one today. What defines Killer Monster Steroids: an added baffle, a reface, thinner rails, or a brighter Link? I anxiously await part 2... Great idea for a blog Steve, you can follow up with a Battle of the Link Clones from Outer Space brought to you by Sakshama, Barone, Wanne, Klum, Gregory, Phil-tone, CE Winds etc... for Link-based modern pieces with that something extra.

Steroids are good. Isn't that what Jose Canseco kept saying?

In part 2....the reviews, you will need, for comparative purposes, a maximum volume reading on each........ as the volume is the prime reason for the modifications.
May I suggest a No.5 reed...or even a reversed reed, with the butt at the mouthpiece tip.

How far away do you think I should put my phone for the reading? next to the bell, a foot away, 6 feet away, across the room? Maybe it doesn't matter as long as it is in the same place for both mouthpieces. I'm curious what the differences in volume will be now? Interesting............

There's an iphone/ipad app called n-track tuner, that not only works as a tuner, but also graphically shows the overtone frequencies. Maybe you would need someone else to make a screenshot while you play, but it would definitely show differences in volume and volume of different overtones. For comparative purposes it doesn't really matter how far away you measure. For most practical purposes I' say two measurements, one as if you are close miking (a typical real-life situation), and one 10 meters away, as heard in the audience (another typical real life situation).

Had a laugh with that post, looking forward to part 2.

This may be heinous, but I have an EB/early 80s HR Link that I just put in a bigger clamshell baffle as a temporary test, to see how it'd sound. Totally didn't expect it, but the resulting tone sounded amazing at first stab so I've decided to let it cure and become permanent. If I ever sell on ebay I'll be sure to add the words "MONSTER" and "EATS BABIES"

From personal experience tinkering with baffles, it can be a total miss though. Have a NY STM that serves as my sacrificial lamb for modified baffles, and raising the floor really killed the core tone, making it sound like a Selmer Jazz metal mpc.
