I dont know about better but Im doing major scales at 150 bpm. And that's a personal best. Glad to talk about what you are doing. Is it working. What do you want to get done. You are welcome to lurk and not do audio or video. Its like we are in a practice room in college playing stuff to make us better or to fulfill an assignment like learning a tune to gig with. Etc. All are welcome we are all on the same path K

Nice! I’ve been playing way more bass than horn this week…maybe a good week to do a couple speed burns on a scale or pattern. I have a practice later, but maybe I can get a baseline recorded and see what 5-10 minutes a day turns into.
When I was in college I wasn’t a music major and I was self-conscious about using the practice rooms even though it was a small program and I was taking a lesson, ensemble, and theory. My loss for sure.

Yeah. I used to practice in the rooms at university of mo at st Lewis and nobody. There. But at berklee the rooms were filled by noon. Imagine practicing an etude with Maynard furgusson wannabe in the next room screaming high gs on trpt and some drummer doing rudiments in the other side of you. It was crazy. See you tomorrow and I def want that looper. K

Good chat, lots of interesting topics even though there were only 4 in the room this week. Are they old enough to know/ be interested in what you do musically?
@J-Moen , that solo on Rio is fun…forgot how bangin’ a tune that is, bass line is great…all those (new) waves and not a drop of water on anyone’s suit in the video 🤷‍♂️🤣

Sorry to have missed today as well—up in the mountains taking my son skiing. Fun that Rio came up—that was one of the songs I did with the 80s cover band I was playing with here pre-covid. Our jazz ensemble does our performance this Thursday at the jazz school in Berkeley, so I'll report back on how that goes, and and will see if I can get the recording from the guy that runs the console. See you all next time!

Heh, our bassist and drummer go into focus mode when that one comes up. Fun lines, and a killer sax solo! Thanks for the assist on dialing in the outro.

Very nice! And I am sure you notice how your timing at slower beats gets a lot more precise because you are no longer "reactive, trying to catch up" but anticipating each note and hitting it on the dot. That was really the point of "speed training".
Keep going, you'll be at 200, ever 300 in no time if you just do 5-10 min a day to loosen your fingers and beat your brain into executing at that tempo.

It's not the perfection at the faster speed that matters. Like I told you before, I practice at tempi that I would never want anybody else to hear but that's not the point of it. The point is rather to develop the fluidity and dexterity, even when it is sloppy at the fastest you can go. But then in real life situations, you catch yourself playing things that you did not think you could do, at 3/4 of your practice tempo and it'll come out clean. And because your in-time is clean, it feels great, no matter what notes you play and moreover, it will allow you to swing in a very controlled fashion. But that's for next week :)
