That would be a later student-model Zephyr which is neither silver nor gold but lacquer and nickel. Quite possibly a great horn, but not particularly desirable.

That looks like a cool horn. Be prepared to spend up to $500 to get it in proper shape by a tech, or you could get lucky.

The case looks nice, I'd pay over $100 just for the case.

I've been spending too much on ebay lately, or I'd bid on it.

I'd avoid that New Voll True II - it looks great and all, but what you really want is an early Zephyr, sometime in the 40's to early 50's (mid 200,000s to early/mid 300,000s). That's the best bet - ones of those vintage are basically Super 20s without the pearls. Good luck in the search. I'm a big Zephyr fan, so...wise choice!

The design and quality of the Zephyr did not change from 1948 (when the 3-ring hook and old-style neck brace were eliminated, and the key guards were changed to the Super 20 variety) to 1958, when the double socket neck was eliminated. I have owned Zephyrs from 1952, '54 and '56 (the latter I still own) and they were all identical with the same features and quality of construction.

Someone once wrote--and it has been repeated ad nauseum since--that the quality fell off in the "early 50's," but this is simply not true. The Zephyr did not become a "student" (or intermediate) horn until 1958 when the double-sleeve neck was eliminated. If you don't believe me, just check hnwhite.com, the website maintained by the White family.

But I guess it all depends on what your definition of student horn is; however, from my experience if a Zephyr from 1956 is a student horn in some people's book, then so is one from 1951.

Looking at some older horns to purchase. I am also interested in Conn Chu's, but I have no idea if this one on Ebay is a student level or pro level horn.

It does not look like the older/vintage zephyr's I have seen.

Any ideas on this horns quality and sound?

Thanks...
