Bari: Welcome to SOTW. I've owned several Yanagisawa saxophones and still have two of their sopranos. Any mouthpiece I like works on any Yanagisawa soprano I've played. Those horns are mouthpiece friendly.

As to a specific mouthpiece that YOU will like? Who knows? All I can tell you is what I like.

I play traditional jazz and abhor microphones or amplification. I use a Morgan Vintage 7 on my S992 with a Selmer Super Session J as a back-up; and a Selmer Super Session J on my SC902 with a Morgan Vintage 6 as back-up.

I have several others that work, but I prefer those that were mentioned. DAVE

Okay thanks Dave!
Ive tried the Super Sessions on Alto. Ive heard everything on Soprano is different. So Im trying to get a feel for what will work.
I have an S6 Sop and an Elimona 'Nino. Currently I really like the HR Beechler on my S6, even more than my SS, Soloist, HR Yani, or Metal Yani. For whatever reason, it has allowed my tone to stay the most consistently full throughout the range of the instrument. In my S6, the other mpcs get a little thin up top. (Disclaimer, my S6 is re-lacquered. I don't know if that makes a difference, but I did want to mention it WITHOUT starting a debate regarding that issue.)

For my 'Nino, the metal Yani has inched its way to the top.

Happy Hunting!

Bari: I have a Super Session F for alto and like it, but for me, the soprano and alto Super Sessions are completely different in playing characteristics. Both of my SS pieces are the most open that Selmer offers.

On soprano, the SS-J is very focused and strong (some claim it is bright but that term is subjective to the max).

On alto, the SS-F is very spread and lacks the focus of the soprano version. DAVE

I have a Yani S990 that is labeled Prima and Elimona. I alternate between my Super Session 'I' and a Yani metal 7. The SS tends towards a more traditional soprano sound, and the Yani metal gives me easy access to a more modern 'smooth jazz' sound with great power and projection. On both bari and soprano, I have found the yani metal pieces to be great matches to yani horns. I have not had the same experience on my A991, where I still use a Meyer NY.

If interested, I have an older "stubby blank" Beechler FS. Bob Carpenter opened it to .065". $70 + shipping, PM me.

FWIW, I recently tried an older Yani soprano and it seemed pretty tolerant of mouthpieces, with Otto Link STM, Yani metal and Super Session mpcs all blowing fine on the horn, so it likely depends on the sound and feel you want. It had the Mk VI type palm keys and no model number or name on the horn.

Also have a new Vandy V16 S6 for the same price.
