I have an Alto 991 and Soprano 981. They are both 10 years old and if you know Yani's, they came in those black hard cases with the spongy covering which in my case is starting to fray alot due to wear/tear.

I want to get case replacements (no gig bags) for these that are at least the same or better in protection quality but improve exterior durability (no more ripping) and maybe some room to put music somewhere (which these don't have).

How do the PROTEC cases for Alto/soprano compare to the Yani's?

Any other brand names come to mind? I thought of the Selmer light cases which I've always admired but they seem really expensive (like 400$).

Protecs are fine as are Gators. I use both. They dont have the vault-like reputation of a Hiscox, but for work-a-day use where you're schlepping your own gear, they do just fine. Carry your music in a small, soft briefcase. You really want to separate as much weight from the horn as possible.

Put your wear and tear on a Gator case and save the nice factory cases for special occassions or for when its time to sell the horn.

Besides, you wont find a Hiscox in the U.S.

After looking at the websites of Protec, Gator, Hiscox, and Reunion Blues, I think I'm leaning to the Protec cases. Anyone with experience with them care to comment on their build quality. Would the Yanigasawas fit in well? Question - are these cases a step up in quality from the Yani cases I got?

Why??? Still some available as of this date.

BTW, J Winter cases, which come inexpensively from WWBW are actually quite good. They seem a bit flimsy initially, but can really take a beating. Not that I would know this from my own experience, but my saxophone teacher uses a contoured J Winter case for his MKVI tenor, which is is holding up remarkably well. The alto case does fit a 991 well.

I've used a few ProTec cases in the past. They are better built than GATOR, but not as nice as your OE case. As far as protection goes, they offer as good or better protection however. Again, I use these cases to save the wear and tear on my OE cases, not as a replacement. When I sell a horn I put it back in a really good condition OE case (if and when I have one).

Brasscane, at one point in time I looked for HISCOX cases and couldn't find them in the U.S. Thanks for the info.

For alto the BAM Cabin case is pretty hard to beat. Great protection and so tiny!

If the interiors of these cases are still good, any consideration for case covers?

I have a Vito/Yanagisawa soprano in a ProTec and a newer Yanagisawa in its original case. The ProTec, while it has served well, doesn't come close to the original case for fit and stability of the horn. (It's made for a generic soprano, and can't be expected to fit as well.) If the interiors of your cases are still in good shape, you might consider case covers.

While I don't have the NEWEST ProTec cases, I've heard they have movable soft-blocks in them to better brace the horn. Mine don't have those blocks, but all of my straight sopranos (including an S901) fit in the ProTec cases good enough for me to feel secure about them as long as I do MY part when handling them.

I replied privately to the OP so all I have had to say, up to this point, was said to him.

Another thing - there was another thread about ProTecs and straight Buescher sopranos by Mike Cudahy. You may want to read that thread as well. DAVE
