"...definitely the best from England..." says the Yamaha product manager talking about Nigel Hitchcock.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but statements like that really annoy me. Musicianship isn't quantifiable, it's not measurable like track and field results...Who's to say that such and such saxophonist is the best from his or her country?

Anyway nice video, carry on...

Funny! I dunno . . . I suppose if I came across one in my travels, I would consider it (after all the bad-mouthing I've done about Yamahas . . .). But unlike other saxophones and clarinets I've actively pursued in the past, I don't think I'd go that far. Still, I keep an open mind and would really enjoying trying a few. DAVE

Does having a changeable neck on a soprano make a difference to sound as apposed to the mentioned Custom Z?

CraigAB: I don't think so, but others may disagree. My opinion comes from owning many of both styles. I think there IS a difference among the various necks, though (e.g., curved necks vs. straight necks) and that difference exists among both the saxophones with changeable necks as well as those with one-piece necks (curved and straight). My preference is straight necks regardless of whether or not they are one-piece. I even prefer a straight neck on my curved soprano and most curvies come with only a curved neck.

Another example - I have both a Yanagisawa S992 (changeable necks) and an S901 (fixed straight neck). They both are powerful, strong, and in tune. Put the curved neck on the S992 and it immediately is reduced in strength. Of course, can the audience hear that change? I doubt it. DAVE

Anybody AB-ed the Custom 82ZR with the good old 62R? Price wise they are almost in the same bracket. Juz that one is new and the other is vintage. I havnt tried the 82ZR. But the vintage nut in me seems to tell me that the 62R is still superior.

I think the diff has more to do with the feel rather than sound. Subtelities of sound aside, the bent neck one piece sops has a tad more resistance to me. The playing angle is also diff, as compared to playing a straight neck one piece sop.

Some people think there is a change in sound. I'm not going to debate that here, but having a bent neck offers one the ability to play behind a stand, particularly while seated, without tipping one's chin towards their chest. It isn't always practical to hold a sop straight out in "proper" position. Additionally, a bent neck can assist with the use of a neck strap, if someone wants to use one that is.

Removable neck sops are slightly heavier than their one-piece siblings. If you prefer to play a straight sop without a neck strap, then a one-piece may be more comfortable.
