After watching a bunch of videos of him playing, his style grew on me. He doesn’t appear to need sheet music and has internalized all the melodies. I think in the context of the music he is playing, his clarinet adds something.Just listened to that Woody Allen clip you posted (well, I should say I listened to the first minute or two, which was all I could take). A great musician?? You're joking, of course (I hope).
I was listening to Tuba Skinny when I read your post! For modern day trad jazz clarinetist, check out Craig Flory in Tuba Skinny, a New Orleans street band (they also play festivals and concerts). Tuba Skinny has lots of videos on utoob. Be sure to hear Erika Lewis on vocals. Shaye Cohn, bandleader, is excellent on cornet. And so is the trombone player. And the washboard. All the players are good.
Thank you, I see why Woody Allen likes George Lewis! 😍it's important to note that his model (and I have seen him play a fair amount) is George Lewis (the old New Orleans guy). Lots of arpeggios, similar tone, and everything else,
