Hello,

The following clip is of a very interesting musician from New Zealand (lives in Europe) by the name of Hayden Chisholm. He plays on a Selmer Super Action Alto Sax and a Vandoren A35 mouthpiece with Vandoren V16 #4 reeds.

I am aware that it is not this simple, but do you think a Vandoren A20 or A25 will help to achieve similar sound?

Thanks

Maybe, but the A20 and A25 are basially classical mouthpieces. The A35 is more commonly used for jazz.

I don't have any first-hand experience with any of those mouthpieces, but I can tell you right now that even if you use an A35 and V16s does NOT mean that you will achieve the same sound (having fallen victim to the same in a vain attempt to emulate Dave Koz a while back)

Having tried several mouthpieces I am aware that mouthpieces don't get you the sound you're after, but certain characteristics of a mouthpiece can make it easier to get the desired sound. Chisholm has a focused smooth non edgy sound, what I am really asking is whether the A20 or A25 can help to produce such sound.

Why did you choose the A20 or A25. Is it because you already own these mouthpieces?

Nice tone, very Desmonesque.

I started this thread last year about the V5 A35.

I thought it was too open to be considered a classical mouthpiece but apparently not.

The A20 has the same chamber as the A35 so it could work.
Thanks for the link. Post #5 did it for me.
"im pretty sure that an A35 was more aimed for jazz but can be pushed into classical. I use an A20 and it sits between jazz and classical leaning towards classical but i can always push it into jazz work because the tone I get is in between."
I am getting the A20.
