Interesting stuff. I played my fair share of bassoon parts on alto back in HS orchestra. I assume that’s a somewhat common substitution when your orchestra is short on bassoons.

Interesting video, thank you for posting. It resonates with a reaction I received from a family friend years ago....he plays classical piano/organ....said "well, the saxophone has its place in popular music, not as versatile as the clarinet". I took the comment in context....from a guy who primarily counts on beats 1 & 3. :twisted:

He probably never heard of the Mi-Bemol Saxophone Ensemble in Japan. 🙂

They often sound like a traditional orchestra but it's all saxophones. They do have some YouTube videos with some percussion and string instruments playing with them.

Excellent clip! Thanks for posting. Love classical sax. I asked some of our alto sax students to cover the French horn parts in high school to help the overall sound. Extremely versatile instrument.

Adolph Sax's problems with the French musical establishment reminds one of today's "cancel culture" wherein those with opinions not in line with a certain way of thinking are cancelled, doxxed, memory-holed, etc. etc.

I've followed David Bruce on YouTube for a couple years now, really interesting guy and great videos. I particularly like the ones where there is a kind of "compositional competition" - he did one where 5 people were given the task of writing a piece for a small ensemble that incorporated 5 short themes, one of which was "The Lick".

It's really, really good.
