Awesome group. I got to see them at Blues Alley in D.C. and met Michael during the break. The dressing room is right next to the bathroom, he was in the room by himself and I said "great show"on my way by. I was caught by surprise when he waved me in to talk. I was so star struck that all I could think of was the stand by "what mouthpiece are you using". LOL! He was gracious enough to show me his Guardala (before they were well known) and even wrote down Dave's phone number on a napkin.

Because you are a child?
Unless he joined at the a young age, I doubt it - Member since 2003...

I've just really started more Brecker listening and found them as well, but I am a child, especially in technique and performance :p.

I was totally oblivious to and mostly unaware of pop music in general in the late 70s and early 80s. I just tuned out for awhile. I was sitting in a bar circa 1988 and started a conversation with a stranger sitting next to me who became irate when the subject turned to the rock group Arrowsmith and I honestly didn't know who they were. It was awkward.

I meet college students all the time (or I used to, before the quarantine) who say they've never heard of Led Zeppelin or the Who or other boomer icons. Haven't run into one who hasn't heard of the Beatles, though.

Regarding Steps Ahead, didn't those records first come out on a Japanese label? I wonder if there was something in the Brecker Bros contract that prevented the Steps albums from being promoted in the US? Because they definitely seem to be less well-known here in the States compared to Europe and, especially, Japan. Just a wild guess.

Likewise for me. Too busy studying or working. Only in the last 10-15 years have I discovered the Eagles and I like pretty much everything they did. Back in the day - never heard of them.

Well, OP has a lot of listening to do, and that's great! Mike Mainieri came to North Texas when I was in school so I bought my copy of "Smokin' at the Pit" directly from him, which is kinda neat.

A couple good friends of mine from the band Mingo Fishtrap (they post here on the forum occasionally) recently introduced me to this Don Grolnick record, "Hearts and Minds," with tons of phenomenal Brecker playing on it. I'm not crazy about all the tunes, some of them are fantastic and some of them are on the smooooth side for my tastes, but the good tracks are damn good. I hadn't heard Grolnick outside of "Steps" or his pop production work, really.

I'm really embarrassed to be the one to bring this up, but it's Aerosmith -- and you've proved your point. ;)

If you like "Hearts and Minds" you might like to check out Grolnick's "London Concert," which is a live gig with Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Marty Ehrlich, Robin Eubanks, Peter Washington, Peter Erskine & Don Alias. It's great, and there's lots of top notch MB. As someone who has kind of made a hobby of finding the best jazz recordings Micheal Brecker made as a sideman, "London Concert" is up there near the top, alongside the record he made with Chick Corea or Hal Galper.

Yeah that's a fair hijack I'd say.

But being from British Columbia yeah. Powder Blues are legends for sure. I was lucky enough to gig with Jack Lavin and Willy MacCaulder a bit when I lived in Vancouver. Jack lives here now. I see him every once in a while.
