JOE HENDERSON. (great apologies to Bird and Warne Marsh) but when it comes to flat out saxophone playin, it's hard to beat Joe, I dunno if he ever made a lackluster appearance.
Just by looking at the players on an album, and if you see Joe Henderson, you know there are going to be some LINES played on that album.

As for living players. MARK TURNER.

Can't name just one. First and foremost, Bird, then Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, George Adams, George Garzone, Jackie McLean, James Spaulding, and Eric Dolphy, but there are too many greats to limit yourself.

I didn't read the OP, I just read the title. Anyway they're still my favorites even dead. I can't think of anyone playing today who has a tone or can play a ballad on tenor like Dexter, no matter how much of a pulse they have.
