When I was a kid (several decades ago), I did this all the time. I would also put several together (maybe 10 ft long) to get the same range as a contrabass clarinet. It was a blast.
A stem of dandelion can work to this effect too. The soft fibrous material makes it easy to pinch a split to make a double reed, but it's hard to carve tone holes. However if you find a stem whose OD matches another ones ID, you can make a trombone slide of sorts.
Amazing how a huge talent can find many ways to make music. With the carrots, straws, wash tubs, washboards, saws, spoons, etc., and some talented musicians, you could have a 'Penny Orchestra' that would be great.
He is obviously a very skilled woodwind/oboe? player. I found it interesting how much he could change the pitch by just using his oral cavity. Thanks for posting that.
