I'm not sure how many ppl here listen to Dream Theater, but the Mars Volta thread that just popped up gives me hope. There is a very cool sax solo in the song "Another Day" by Dream Theater, anyone know who plays it?

Is this the album that "Hold me Under" is on? If so, the artist is listed in the CD liner. I don't have the CD, but I babysat for a guy who has it and I listened to it. I don't know how much this actually helps you...
Holy CRAP!

Why:? I am normal...
hahaha, it took two posts to get off topic! classic! :toothy7:

well the crisis has been averted, after a bit of snooping around on the intarwebs I found out it is Jay Beckenstein. Apparently he's in a jazz band thats been around for quite awhile, Spyro Gyra, I believe he's recorded 21 albums with them, and he recently released a solo album.

you're right Martinman, its on "Images and Words", DT's second album, which also has "Pull Me Under" on it. He's also been featured on two of their live albums, "Live Scenes From New York" and "Once In A Livetime" since they performed "Another Day" at those shows.
Beckenstein is a monster, along with Spyro Gyra. It is the best Jazz that is smooth, as opposed to being smooth jazz.

And wow, what is wrong with me babysitting? It's good money...
Check and see if it was recorded at Jay's studio. I think it's called Beartracks? Anyway, I really enjoyed those earlier records of Spyro Gyra's when I was younger. He studied with Don Menza if I recall correctly.
I believe I read something about him being a student of Charles Mingus as well? And I just love the controlled sound he has, very clean and "classy" sounding, although I'm sure he can roar too. I like the series of runs he does at the end of the "Another Day" solo from the studio version, with the reverb the runs sound like they're cascading over one another, very cool. I'm going to check out Spyro Gyra right now.

for your viewing pleasure, I found a vid of him performing "Another Day" with DT at the "Scenes From New York" show. Main sax solo is at 4:00 but watch the whole thing, Beckenstein adds a few parts that arent on the studio version and of course Petrucci's guitar solo is always worth watching. LaBrie's voice seems to be wearing out a bit, he hits a few notes slightly off key and doesn't hit the high notes that he did in the studio version when they recorded it in 1992. I love his voice but I think he's showing his age :(
