I play a Bari Gold and love it it is an 8 = .075 I moved from a rubber Link 9* and the Bari leaves it in the dust, the Link was massaged by Sebastian Knox so it is a good playing piece. I had played a Selmer Super Session J for about 10 years before needing something with more punch and edge.

I have a Morgan 5J on Market Place that I believe is .060.
I have a lot of soprano pieces maybe 12 listed for very reasonable prices and others like Bergs, Selmer's, Meyers, and even a rubber Bari and obscure pieces I have not listed.
Reach out to me if you are interested or in how I think they play.

I checked and have a lightly used Bari Dakota 5.

Good luck in your quest.

Links are in your price range. I have a couple Bari mouthpieces, and they are as bright as my Super Session, but more resistant as others have mentioned. Same basic design, squeeze throat with a circular chamber. FWIW none of these are super bright, but they are definitely on the brighter side.

Links are darker sounding, even though they also have the same basic design. The issue with Links is finding one that works well; they suffer from QC issues as many have described.

I’m not trying to drive you in a particular direction, just providing information based on my experience. If you had a larger budget there are other pieces that are much better, such as the 10MFan Virtuoso and Jody Jazz Custom Dark.

I play a Phil Barone vintage on soprano, coming from an S80 C*, but I tried a bari back in the 80s. I think the Barone plays like a really good bari mouthpiece.

The Bari that I played and liked predated the metal band model.

FWIW, the Barone HR “Vintage” is pretty good too - especially in the sub-$300 range.

Once you’re above that, the Phil-Tone Sapphire should be on the list.

Thanks for Your recommendations, George. You’re always on point and if you’re not humoring me with your hysterical posts and quick wit, then you’re always pointing me in the correct direction. I have never heard the Barone vintage, but will take a look right now. The sapphire, however, is a gorgeous piece and indeed would be on my list if I had the money, although if that money was of no option, I probably would have to go with the either the 10mFan Virtuoso. Anyways, thank you so much Doc. I love everything you do for me and all of us here. You’re the best.

Sincerely,
Sean

Thanks Steve, this is invaluable information here as I never would have thought the Bari is as bright as a Super Session. Now you got me scratching my head lol. I have a Link Tone Edge that plays well it was a little stuffy so I measured it and saw that the facing curve was crooked and suffered from a little bump near the tip which created the resistance. I evened the rails and smoothed out the curve. I might have gone a little too crazy with it as I opened up the chamber although it played very well I was concerned I might’ve screwed things up so I sent it to Joe G (SopranoPlanet) And he took a look at it and was going to re-face it for me however, he said that I did a great job, and that he was afraid that he wasn’t going to be able to make it play remarkably better so I opted to take his advise and leave it alone. With that said, I guess I just want to try something that will bridge the gap between that piece and my Metal DV replica from Eastern Music which is actually a really well made a faced piece

The 10Mfan virtuoso is a gorgeous piece. I have not tried one, but the soprano player in our sax quartet plays one. He sounds much better on it than whatever he was using before.

Indeed it is. I too havent tried one but I believe Mark knows his stuff as well as anyone So I wouldn’t put it past him to make one of the best playing pieces out there. Everyone I have heard on it sounds amazing again i havent heard it in person but only on clips from YouTube but judging from the clips and reviews alone I think he is definitely onto something with that virtuoso…. Just don’t have the money for one.

I wouldn’t class .059 As super small and less it’s not quite as advertised

That’s what my link tone edge six measured

I bought a Bari Esprit a while back, and it's worse than my stock Yamaha 4C in almost every way. More resistant, airy sound, harder to play the low notes, harder to play the high notes, and it tunes so flat that I have to push in so far that the end of the neck bottoms out on the mouthpiece. The only thing going for it is that the upper register sounds a bit more edgy, but I don't recommend it.
