You can get the smaller sizes in a set from Sears because they are used for all sorts of small gap measuring in machine shops and what not. Check out the Mouthpiece work group here : http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/MouthpieceWork/

It is run by Mojo Bari and typically pretty active. There is info (what to use and where to get) in the file section (you'll have to register and become a member) on all sorts of tools for mouthpiece measurement and refacing. As far as web groups go I've found it to be one of the more sharing communities where the guys with a lot of experience are very willing to share their knowledge.

I know someone else on the web is selling machined feelers. I cant recall who. I vote Mojo as well.

I use the old set you are referring to. Below .035 I use a set from an auto parts shop.

The thick ones are worth their weight in gold. I promise you that.

Babbitt will sell them to you if you contact them (at least they did 6 years ago). They also sell the glass ruler to use with the feelers. At sears you can also make a simple tip guage using a debth guage and a speed square. You will need a super flat surface like the glass ruler to calibrate it!

I bought a custom set from Eastern Industries (http://www.easterngage.com/) a couple years ago. They made them without the radiused edges, which is more accurate I think. It appears to me that Theo Wanne has his gauges made there, since there is a picture of the Theo Wanne set on their web site.

Regarding the price, it was about $260, but I bought 3 sets. Of course, it would have been over $200 for just one set.

They do their own work in their own shop, no other countries involved.

I also bought a set from Eastern Gage. I bought the 12" long gages that covered the "standard" sizes (.0015, 0.010, 0.014, 0.024, 0.035, 0.050, 0.063, 0.078, 0.093, 0.109, 0.125) plus all sizes from 0.005" up to 0.100" in 0.005" increments. I think I have over 30 gages in my set. The expanded set lets me take plenty of measurements on soprano pieces, while the standard set only allows 5 or 6 measurements on a soprano piece.

The carbon steel set cost around $130 a fews years back. I cut the 12" long gages to make four 30-gage sets. That's a lot of bang for the buck. I keep the gage set on a board that I lined with magnet strips that hold the gages in place. The carbon steel does rust if exposed to moisture but I wipe the gages down with a rag sprayed with WD-40 occasionally.
