I feel the same way. I submitted a video of me playing a song to Eric Marienthals site and he listened and critiqued. He notices that I had a good tone but did many many inflections that got in the way. Who Knew?? So I am very careful now to do an inflection but do it a way that adds to he line im playing. Usually just with the half step fingering rather than scooping jp and down. I watched out for scoops growing up. For me (in the late 1960s) that represented the old farts who played in the 40s and 50s. I wanted to sound modern? so I was copying sanborn and 1960 artists. (I started sax in my 20s so it was around 1976. I was into the funk/groove scene rather than copying the "old farts" from the 50s 40s. ) Not good or bad but how I felt then. K
Interesting! So with you providing a feedback to my post, you are "Eric" and I am me

. Love your conclusions and feelings about playing.
Today I listened Dave Koz after some Giants and want to mimic a bit his playing. After all I will be me. But I feel always good after mimicking old shcool guys and young talanted musicians.
Love a lot Patrick Bartley... Discovered his name from Emmet Cohen. Trying to play some of his stuff. So cool. BTW, just receive LP and CD from Emmet. Patrick plays with him on this recording.
