It's the same as my 'Jazz' set up.
Either an old C* that's been reworked by F. Rast or an old unmarked Yamaha piece with Hemke 2.5's.
Horn is an oddball. It says Pan Am on the bell, but it's on a Martin body tube.

The only difference is the mouthpiece: JodyJazz DV for jazz (strident), Vandoren TL4 otherwise (smooth).

Conn Transitional Chu, #246xxx, with Woodwind '36 or stock Eagle mpc, brass lig, and reed in the 3 1/2 range (typically a Superial or Superial DC).

"bandmommy"'s answer goes for me too; same gear. Sometimes a Berg metal piece comes on for jazz, but the Phil-Tone Link is good for most of my playing.

Perhaps it would be useful to know what people actually play jazz and classical repertoire vs those that play in community bands.

I actually play both, altho my classical playing has less to do with repertoire than with the original barrel chamber tone as heard in the 1920s and 30s.

Used to be Selmer S80 C*.

Now I can pretty well pull off the same tone on my usual Florida Link STM if required. Luckily, I'm never required to do legit anymore. I only play my own style.

I figure I would quickly get run out of the bandstand and possibly tarred and feathered if I had to attempt to play in a classical orchestra or ensemble. :bluewink:

For playing in a classically oriented wind ensemble:

Keilwerth SX90R

Meyer HR Tone Edge, 6M
- - slightly refaced specifically for playing in this ensemble
- conventional 2-screw metal lig.
- either Vandoren Trad or Hemke #3 reeds

Since much of my playing is done in a community band/pit orchestra setting my response should not be included?
I do a lot of classical stuff in the privacy of my practice area and use the same set up as when I do jazz stuff.
Yeah... You're right. Community band stuff doesn't count.

I have to agree with you.

That aside, I do find a BIG difference between the demands of community band, classical quartet, and contemporary big band.

If you choose to use the same tones for everything, that's your call. I find community band parts where most tenor parts are doubling low brass to be very different from French or American classical quartet rep.

Cheers!

I just change mouthpieces. On tenor I use a 4a 18 MC Gregory Model A. Round, medium chamber, no baffle. Perfect for me.
