Hi, guys.

I sell my mark VI alto last year and now I back play alto sax, soo I buy one conn 6M gold lacquer 275.XXX.

Great sound and fat, warm, but I always play meyer mouthpieces in alto sax, and it play good but no great in 6M for me.

I use one meyer 6M made in USA very old, nice and great control and tone, but I fell I need more things ... I have 3 meyer edition limited in past and its wonderfull player in all sax I play mark VI, SA I and II, SBA, BA and conn 6M too.

I prefer alexander superial 2 1/2 or 3 reeds, but play good with la voz, heemke and java green reeds too.

Well, let me know the best mouthpiece you play in conn 6Ms.

Very thanks,

Wellison

Try a Link Tone Edge (rubber) mpc. I find Meyers add a little too much brightness on notes above high A. Links play a little differently and don't do this.

The best mpcs ever on my 6Ms? Vintage Brilharts from the 40s and 50s, and a Bilger-Morgan J6 (no longer made either!).

Well, this is heresy, but I just don't seem to be that influenced by types of mpcs being best for certain kinds of horns, especially the vintages. With my Conn 6M, I played a Runyon Custom, a Jody Jazz ESP, a Meyer 6M, and tried out to see how they worked, a Kessler HR and a Jody Jazz HR. I (and my section mates and the leader of a big band I was playing lead in) really liked the Runyon (caveat: it had been tweaked by Jon Van Wie). It had enough edge for the more contemporary things but had a certain sweetness for more traditional things. If I remember right, I stayed with the ESP after i switched to it. It was easier to play than the Runyon, which wasn't difficult to play, it's just that the ESP practically played itself.

I use two different mouthpieces on seven different altos in my closet (vintage dating from early 1920's to modern - a Ref 54) and I agree with gary. If the horn plays good and the set-up I'm using plays good FOR ME, then we have a deal.

I am not into horn matching, although I do have some sopranos where one piece is better for a certain saxophone. But that choice is mine alone because these things change when someone else is on the playing end. It is impossible for any of us to give you a solid recommendation based on what we like and use. This is something you must work out yourself.

Lastly, I recognize that you wanted to know what we use on our 6M's. I don't have one - used to have a New Wonder and it was the same as I've described above. I used whatever I liked at the time on all of altos. DAVE

I feel like a ton of mouthpieces work really well on 6M's, but my favorites are vintage selmer mouthpieces and meyers. I've used both scroll shank and soloist selmer mouthpieces on vintage conns for years and have found them to be complimentary to the bore size, especially on early 6m's. Also have had good experiences with all sorts of meyers, though generally medium chamber.

Cool...The issue I get with Meyers is what I call "excess brightness" - more than the horn can use. It gets noticeable in the 2nd octave vent range (A2 and up). Instead of a tangy projecting tone, it's kind of a whistle on top of the tone.

It's more obvious to me on Buescher than Conn altos (which is interesting as Meyer is kind of the default jazz/commercial piece for Buescher users).

My Conn 6M 288,XXX is my main horn. Wonderful warm, broad tone, and which in my case seems to benefit well from gaining a bit of definition and 'pop' from a NY Meyer type piece (a Morgan Fry .073 tip, w/ Rigotti 2 1/2 hard). Had been using a Link Slant Sig and Brilhart HR pieces, both worked quite well and are great on other horns, but didn't give me the same definition and 'pop'.

But, as others have stated, the choice really has more to do with your own sound conception. The 6M generally is pretty mouthpiece friendly, and personally I think that medium to larger chambered pieces accentuate its best qualities.....however, others have recommended Selmer and Runyon mpcs also, so apparently your choices are many. Good luck.
