I'm doing my graduate recital on flute in the fall. After the Bach, Mozart, etc. I'm doing some jazz and am trying to decide on which tunes to do. I'd like to do a really beautiful tune and there are so many options, and probably some tunes I don't even know, which would be really cool. Any ideas greatly appreciated. (Not flute specific- just looking at tunes).

A couple that I like on flute are Rodgers and Hart's "Where or When" and the old Nat King Cole version of "Nature Boy". Nature Boy in particular has a haunting melody.

I like these ballads a lot, but maybe also because of the version I shared with them:

- 'Time After Time' - Ben Webster version:

- 'The Nearness Of You' - Arnett Cobb version:

- 'Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered' - Von Freeman version:

- 'Laura' - Dexter Gordon version:

- 'Alone Together' - Archie Shepp version:

I could go on (but won't)!

A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square - nothing complex about it, but "hauntingly beautiful" is exactly how I would describe my feelings toward it.

Round Midnight
Well, duh...

I recall hearing Tim Price playing this on alto flute. Whew... Yeah!

So, yes, that is a +1 and Amen for 'Round Midnight.

I played a big band arrangement of 'Round Midnight by Robert C. Jones that had the most amazing trombone soli. Absolutely haunting.

+1 for Soul Eyes. Incredibly beautiful tune, not that well known. Coltrane's ballad version is gorgeous.
