What are your home remedies for a cold/flu?

I started having symptoms last night (scratchy throat, tired.. ), this morning I woke up and I couldn't speak.

I usually take echinacea and get some rest....

Just curious as to what you do.

well, a cold is not a flu although a flu might have some symptoms in common with a cold they are VERY different beasts.

Both are the product of a viral infection and there is not much to do to fight these viruses.

If you have a cold, and I hope that that is the case ad opposed to having a flu, drink a lot, vitamin c helps. Honey might help your throat and lemon juice too. Aspirin will help too. Good luck. It will pass.

I've gotten good results with megadoses of red wine and Italian food (heavy on the tomato sauce), plus serious bedrest.

That will cure anything !

I just had some homemade chicken soup and I'm feeling a bit better.

I think it's the flu and not a cold, usually when I have a cold I just cough without feeling run down.

I make a BIG steaming cup of strong black tea. Then I add Lemon juice, Honey, and a shot of whiskey.
It won't 'cure' the bug, but if you drink enough of it you really won't give a poop that you're sick. ;)

Yes, I can verify this... A one-shot-cup of Whiskey (Cognac, Remi Martin, Johny Walker, or s'thing like that) with half of a lemon (lime is better, actually; thin sliced); heat up (microwave for 10~15 sec) and coming down in ONE SHOT (yes)... Not recommended for children under 16 of age...

in the midst of being very sick, rest and a lot of liquids. then i try to sweat it off, like sitting in the sun, or somwhere warm and muggy. if i can't do that then have a big huge bowl of the vietnamese pho (noodle soup) with lots of jalapeno. you can't taste it when you're sick anyway. it'll make you sweat and purge out of every oriface. not pretty but very effective. garlic helps with the crud at the end.

The chicken soup did act as an expectorant.

I'm out of booze and honey and I'm not up to walking to the store.

I don't know if any of you have ever chewed raw garlic before, but it will make you puke!

Flu is generally accompanied by a high fever, and a dry cough.

I may be crazy (this is not a poll) but if I feel a cold coming on I take a loading dose of Vitamin D and then follow it daily. The result is no cold in years. I work in confined settings with ill people. It is far from proof but its a difficult track record to argue.

I'm reminded of an old Beverly Hillbillies episode where Mr. Drysdale found out that Granny could cure the common cold. Of course he had faith in her home remedies, so he lined up investors and the bidding war began. To test it out, Granny had Drysdale, his investor of choice and a doctor go through all sorts of nutty things, including cutting off their hair and burying it in the back yard. When they were finished with all that, they pleaded "now what?" To which Granny told them to get some rest, drink plenty of fluids and the cold will be gone within seven to ten days...

You don't have to chew the garlic. Just chop it finely, put in a teaspoon and have a glass of water ready to wash it down as soon as you put the garlic in your mouth.
If you are concerned about having the smell of garlic on your breath, then buy the garlic pills. You can find those at any natural remedies store, some pharmacies have them too now.

Vitamin C chewable tablets, the mega dose ones; garlic on everything you can have it on; lemon in your tea; a big shot of rum before bed; and as much bed rest as you can get. Generally takes a couple of days and you can get on with life fairly well after that.
