Re: What are you listening to right now? (NEW thread)

Morning Harri
Jack Bruce " Things We Like"...........Jack has a new book out on his life which will make a great contrast to Gingers great book. Jack in great Ornette influenced mode with Jon Hiseman, the amazing Dick Heckstall ( Check out BORN TO BE BLUE..That's how you play a ballad) and John McLaughlin. CD has bonus track left off the vinyl.

Anthony Braxton "What's New In The Tradition" Anthony with a trio of stars playing mostly standards. Really hear the Konitz and Marsh influences in his concept. " What's new" is tremendous and the contrabass clarinet gets an outing in duet with Niels Henning.

Mothers of Invention " Burnt Weeny Sandwich".........Original Mothers and Zappa at his finest including recording the tenor sax ( Bunk Gardner) the way Johnny Otis showed him to to get " That Greasy 1950's Rockn Roll sax sound" on " Holiday in Berlin."...Ian Underwood excells on piano on Aybe Sea. Totally wonderful.

Music by the Camerata Romeu, a wonderful Cuban women's string ensemble. Although they also play representative music from the western European tradition, they specialise in music written by Cuban composers, much of it written especially for this ensemble. Exquisite stuff.

I just listen to whatever Gary suggests. Seriously great selection above.

I've been listening to this local cat named Maurice Johnson http://www.mauricejohnson.com so I can learn all of his tunes for a gig on the 20th. If it works out he has some European dates lined up. B:cool:

As I am away from home and only have an internet connection to entertain me,
I've been dialling up http://www.accujazz.com
lately and listening to the Latin Jazz channel.

I heard a great version of Milestones last night done by the VW Brothers, who I've never heard of.
Also the Roy Hargrove Big Band has been featured with some outstanding playing.

Ken Peplowski, "Dialogues". Been on a bit of a clarinet-listening binge lately, looking for inspiration I can bring to my own playing. Lots of Don Byron, Pacquito D'Rivera, Frank Glover, Benny Goodman, etc. on my ipod of late.

Gene Ammons LIVE (tenor, organ and drums)...this is an early Prestige pressing (as opposed to a Fantasy OJC) that I picked up at a yard sale on Saturday and it sounds great.

Medicated Magic by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. My favorite track is We Got Robbed, for the funky tenor sax solo, followed by a great trumpet solo. Other great tracks are Walk on Golden Splinters, Ruler of my Heart (with Norah Jones), and Tell it Like it Is (nice bari sax feature).
