I talk a bit about my own background learning how to be a producer as well as a musician, some friends of mine who have organized exciting remote collaborations against daunting odds, and my observations about the college students I teach who adapt to digital methods incredibly quickly. I know quite a few musicians who transitioned to collaborations now, it's very exciting stuff and a very steep learning curve, especially when you are trying to figure things out by yourself. And thanks for the write-up at least now I learned about Progger

Thanks, all! This has been a very strange, challenging, and sometimes unexpectedly rewarding time in my life, and I'm sure that's true for most of us. I'm grateful to EarthQuaker for the platform for running my mouth, but I'm hoping to publish some more things like this in other places in the future... perspectives on the evolving nature of professional musicianship, etc. Cheers!

side note: i've tried a couple of Earthquaker pedals at the Moog Factory Store up the street and they're great. (not affiliated, but i wouldn't turn one down.)

i mix on a desktop, but record on a laptop, and experiment recording horns in a quiet linen closet, a warm living room, and with the echo of the parking garage downstairs.

I can barely get around on my iPhone, so I am always in awe of what players are doing now with this stuff.

Dave is really great at making engaging videos! Seems like he's doing really well from that angle. I'm not nearly as together in the video department as he is, although I'm trying to get better (and this crisis has forced me to make a lot of progress video-wise). Video is definitely the best way to engage with new listeners or prospective artists/producers who might want to work with you, for sure.

Most of the recording work I've been getting has been through producers who already know me or through Soundbetter.com, which is a pretty great platform for remote session coordination.
