Hey all,

So later tonight after work I am heading out to a local jam with my much better half to drink and make music. Its a great little venue, actually a Johnny Cash tribute bar called "A Bar Named Sue."

Anyway, no electrics or distortion, but still a standard three piece and I used to play in a band with two of the hosts so we have some vocabulary. On Soprano I find myself most often playing the guitar leads (Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix are a couple of cats I have serious repsect for!).

(...btw...Since I've Been Loving You from Zeppelin III is an amazing song for a Soprano to take over the intro duties on!)

And now I have been asked to play the soloist guitar parts (including the trademark intro and such) of Voodoo Chile so my girlfriend can sing the song and the whole thing will turn into some kind of bluegrass-acid fusion thing.

Any ideas on how I can approach trying to do some of the bendy/gnarly/thickeningexplosive stuff without any kind of amplification or effects pedals?

LOL...this is going to be fun.

Lots of lip-bends and scoops. Maybe a half size softer reed to facilitate this.
Really "chew" the mouthpiece. Try to get lots of growl in the sound, buzz the lip or hum while playing.

Fortissimo all night, BABY!!

Teeth on the reed might be fun. I'm not sure if it would sound nice but it would be fun ;) . You could always distract everyone by setting fire to your sax. Then sell it on ebay as having "an interesting vintage finish much sought by collectors". And make sure the PAs turned up so you can drown out the others if you need to. Loads of trills and lip stuff. Hum/play for distortion etc Sounds like it could be quite a night!

Rooty,

Unfortunately the gtrs are di'd acoustics, the bass is DI'd from a pod, and the drummer is so tasty I have to ask him to be more beligerant any time I play with him. I dont imagine I will need to me Mic'd, the venue barely holds 120.

If I was being mic'd I'd drag out an army of pedal boards (I NEED A FRIGGIN WAH PEDAL!!! THAT WOULD BE SO COOL!!!) and a wireless clip-on.

Oh well, I can only dream!

Multiphonics, oh yeah BABY.

Play low notes and overblow them. It's almost the same as the controlled feedback Hendrix was so fond of. I've been trying to imitate Hendrix on sax since before he was dead.:cool:

Suggested listening:

Albert Ayler
Marion Brown
Pharoah Sanders
Roscoe Mitchell
Late Coltrane (Expressions, Intersteller Space, Stellar Regions)

I would find a Jimmi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan sound-a-like, get him to do it on guitar and go have a quiet beer.
Pessimist. I still say go for it. Big time.

Absotootalutely!

I used to do that stuff in the 70s in pep band at Hockey games. You can really tear it up. (I did a lot of it with a flute, electrified with wah/distortion/Phase90, or straight acoustic with mouth effects. Thanks to Sheridan Stokes!)

I've filled in for guitar leads from Boston to Allman Bro and Skynyrd whenever there was only one guitar on stage as well. It usually sounds better with guitar and sax unison anyways!

It works best with a freshly cracked reed supported by a lasagna.

I like lasagna!!!

So anyway, my girlfriend decided she wasn't feeling ready to perform that song properly and so instead I just did "A Fantasy on Voodoo Chile" for my solo over "Walking the Dog". ;) lol...it was fun.

Of course all the new stuff I had been working on in practice (I randomly write exercises in the "key of the day", mostly intervalic stuff) fell miserably on its face and went right out the window! At least nothing sucked.

On a bright note, it was kind of a reunion for me and my old band, we fell out in feb and I havent even seen the drummer since until last night. He gave me a hug, so all is well.

AND.......I managed to get a bunch of middle aged blues cats to play Creep by Radiohead...lol.
