Please let us know if you have purchased one and if you thought it was a good investment it were happy with it. Feel free to share model, price, time you spent with it, how much you play each day, whether it was original or worked on (who can tell the difference).

i got my old Meyer Bros NY 5M practically for free. ("case pocket candy") original, not worked on, as best as i can tell. if it isn't perfect, no mouthpiece is. it makes a vintage Martin Searchlight seem like something special. i've got no doubt it would do the same with any quality horn. (my original intent was to purchase a refaced Babbitt piece from someone with experience. i was in no way inclined to pay a lot of money for an original. but if alto was my main horn, and i was real serious, i'd now be real inclined to track one down.)

I had a Meyer 6 limited edition 90s NY Meyer I got for 500 bucks. I remember asking about it on fb and Joel Frahm replied and said that they were great but did not have the same magic as the vintage meyers...

You also need to keep in mind that there is more than one vintage meyer. The most popular are the NY and the Meyer Bros itteration before that. The MB pieces are not as bright, they have larger chambers and actually were French blanks. Also, I have not seen mouthpieces perform magic.

I bet if you took a well playing good version of a Meyer copy and blind tested against an orignal a lot of these guys who assign magic to them would have a hard time. Ive played plenty of them. They are good but no more magic than the next really good mouthpiece. If you want to believe the consumer public you are free to spend a crazy amount of money on a mouthpiece. Its your cash to spash.

I agree with Phil. He makes excellent points.

Thanks and I didnt mean to sound snarky. I simply dont think vintage Meyers are worth the money. I think are rebuilt Meyer or a refaced Meyer new limited edition that has been refaced will serve equally and not be an absurd price. In over 15 years I have not played a mouthpiece worth 1500 bucks period.

As a side note I would get a piece rebuilt other than RR pieces. They call them copies but they are not.

There are many options. If you dont go a rebuilt direction be sure to go with something you can trial and return.

Picked a NYUSA 3L recently off ebay for $350 and sent it off to Brian Powell to have it opened to 0.076". I can say I have very much fallen in love with it, although I have to agree with Phil and the other members above me in saying that paying $800-$1500 for a mouthpiece is quite ludicrous. A lot of the modern Meyer copies well be just as good with the added plus of being readily available in your preferred tip opening, chamber size, etc.. Ive heard really good things about Ted Klum's NY piece, Phil's custom Meyer, and Erik and Brian's NY.

I would love to hear a blindfold test with an original NY or Meyer Bros against their copies. I have owned and tested numerous NY copies and an original that I scored as case candy was significantly better than them all. I wouldn’t buy one myself unless it was $400 or less. The prices are too expensive....but of course....supply and demand...
