Vinnie Golia is in NYC through 4/15 playing at The Stone. I highly recommend checking it out. He is one of my favorite avant-garde sax players. I have a bunch of his CDs from his own Nine Winds label. His playing makes sense and is can be melodic and beautiful even when he uses double-stops/noise/key percussion. He is not a trying to blow the house down, so there is room for dynamics.
I saw him play on Friday night in a duo with Ken Filiano (bass.) Besides some great music, I sat in awe of his embouchure as he switched from Baritone Sax to clarinet, to soprano to flute and back to Baritone.
Tim Price was at the show also.
