Here's Vincent Herring finally pulling out his beautiful custom Z from Yamaha on a gig -
and
. He sounds different than he did on his yani which he played most of his career. Does he sound better on the Z? Here's a video of him on his yani -
. For me it sounds like he's getting a bigger sound, especially on the lower end.

He does sound great on that Yamaha and it is a work of art visually with all of the engraving and snake octave key! I do want to that I don’t think that third video is a Yani. I am pretty sure that when Vincent played Yanis it was all the underslung neck. If you watch to the 4:40 mark you can see it is not underslung.
Yanagisawa made him a special alto and soprano set that you can see for sale at the Boston Sax Shop.

It sounds like him! I think the Yamaha is much more even up and down the horn and a little more spread than his Yanagisawa. Then again, he's playing without a mic. I'm sure he'll get his sound out of whatever.

It just goes to show what prolific engraving along with a plating job does to the sound. Really adds depth and complexity . . . :bluewink:

I googled more of him, and perhaps it's the recording quality, but I just don't hear any drastic differences between him on the Yamaha versus him on the Yanagisawa. Perhaps he just has that Japanese school sound? Or perhaps he just sounds like himself.

I am confused why nobody else is acknowledging that the video reference for a Yanagisawa is not a Yanagisawa? In fact, when I look on YouTube, I am finding him either playing a Yamaha recently or something that looks like a vintage Selmer. Shouldn’t we start attributing this sound comparison between a Yamaha and a Mark VI?

I apologize, let me take back my original statement. I actually took a screen shot of the moment I was talking about. It is obvious he was not playing a Yani in that video. When I click the link now it is not the same video that I did a screen shot for. I don’t know if my phone opened up a different video or something. *shrug*

I think we could do a blinded test of guess the horn among the Mark VI, the 82Z, and the Yanagisawa and not arrive at a consistent answer as to which horn is which. I think his set of Yanagisawa saxophones are absolutely gorgeous while his Yamaha is way over the top. I watched the video of his Yamaha's evolution and to me it's just a tacky end result. I love the 82Z (it's my primary tenor), but we all must admit it's just a glorified 62 with a s*** ton of marketing behind it. Phil Woods didn't jump all over the 62, but he jumped on the YAS-862 or 82Z. The horn didn't really evolve; people's perception of it did. FWIW, I've favored the 875 and 62 over any Selmer since I first played them in 8th grade. But my parents got me a Selmer because that's what the band director recommended. I didn't even know Yanagisawa existed until years later.

Vince is my neighbor today. He sounds great thru a window or in person, regardless of the horn. I purchased a Yani because of his sound and personally I am not disappointed. He just crushes whatever horn he picks up. That Yamaha is a work of art as is the Yani. Well made MP and he is off , high end or low its a full beautiful alto. Now if he is reading this just invite me in for a sound check.
