I recently purchased the M/O ligature (model LC59AP) for bari sax. I used Java red reeds. I tried it on a selmer C* mouthpiece and a Yanagisawa mouthpiece and both times, the ligature is too large for the mouthpiece and I can only get it to tighten sufficiently if I move the ligature to the very bottom (or slightly past the bottom) of the reed. I believe i purchased the correct one because the other baritone option says it is for there V16. Any idea why this is happening?

I have exactly the same problem, the LC59AP is way to large even for my Morgan bari MPC but I found a decent workaround, that is, I cut a piece of a mouthpiece cap (something I had laying around) to make a shim covering about half of the circumference and glued it to the ligature (one side only). Works great, and I haven't found another ligature other than a Rovner that would be large enough

Well, I have an M/O that I use for alto and its a great lig because it fits! One screw and it tightens very well. However, I bought a tenor M/O for my Meyer HR tenor mouthpiece and it's too small. I was gonna order a M/O bari lig for it but I cheaped out and ended up buying a standard 2 screw Yamaha bari lig for $15 on Amazon. So, what I'm getting at is you really need to take in consideration the circumference of any MP to find the right fitting ligature. Anyway, if you can return the bari lig you should swap it for a tenor.

Yeah, the sizing on these is a little funky. I've found the HR tenor ligature to be too small for just about every mouthpiece I own. Every clarinet mouthpiece I own fits basically at the very smallest end of the adjustment range for the M/O ligature. Given that there's very little variation in the width of clarinet mouthpieces, that seems weird to me that they wouldn't have sized it to fit more in the middle of the adjustment range. As it stands, I can barely use it with slimmer reeds like Legere European Signatures.

I've also found that the little indentation that cradles the reed on the rails of the mouthpiece is more or less exactly wide enough for the reed for the specified instrument. That means that you can't readily use the tenor ligature for a slim bari mouthpiece that takes tenor ligatures (for example) because the bari reed is wider than the reed cradle on mine.

It's a nice ligature under exactly the right circumstances though!

Vandoren ligs are more proprietary than they let on. Pretty much every lig will fit my alto pieces but not an Optimum. The MO fits. I have found the Optimum pretty snug on Meyers too. I suppose they fit Vandoren pieces perfectly but a little wiggle room would make them more friendly to other pieces. Its kind of a drag because they are nice ligs. I find the Optimum tenor fits a larger number of pieces. Its confusing if you cant actually try before you buy.

It's like a pair of jeans, I don't think you can really design a one size fits all metal lig. Vandoren Ligs fit great...on Vandorens. I have M/O ligs that fit like a glove on my SL3 and M13 Lyre, and I have an Optimum lig that is similarly great on my AL5. I've tried the Optimum lig on my Rousseau NC4 and it barely fit (chunky mouthpiece, like a Meyer).

I used a couple of different Rovner ligs on my S80 C* back when I used it, and those were good fits. I know Selmer makes a one screw lig similar to the M/O which may be a good fit for your Selmer.

Thank you all for the replies. I play alto and clarinet much more so I have never run into this "ligature doesn't fit unless it's X mouthpiece with Y ligature"-or maybe I have just been really lucky? In any case, I have a couple of Rovners I can use, just wanted to go with something different.

FYI, if you are looking for one screw ligature that fits the Yany BC220 you just purchased from me, you will find that the Frank Bichon BG Tradition Model L60 works perfectly. It holds the reed securely and it looks good. Its a little expensive, but unless you run with the crowd that would rather use a hose clamp instead of shelling out a few bucks you will like it. Here are the tech specs on the manufacturers website, but you can purchase it online for $95 from Walmart where I found the best price believe it or not.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check into it. I am not on "team hose clamp" haha
