I was reading the JazzTimes article linked below which compared the V16 (alto / tenor) to Meyer mouthpieces. So my question is two fold.

  1. Does anyone agree with the alto/tenor comparison to Meyer mouthpieces?
  2. Do you think the Bari V16 is equivalent to a Meyer

I think the alto V16 is brighter than a Meyer and with all the Vandoren lineup of jazz pieces, I think they are too brittle sounding.

...just a personal opinion. That is why I rework Meyers and not Vandorens (and its not because vandorens are perfect...they are not).

I had a V16 alto piece, an A5 I think & I liked it. it was similar to the older meyer pieces, the NY USA. I sold it with a SA80 II alto & kept my early MKVII alto with a Meyer NY Ltd piece. actually I wish I had kept the V16 piece. the A5 had the more big band vintage meyer sound than the A6 or A7 I thought, may not for someone else or at least on my horn it did for me. mouthpieces are different for each person, but I thought for a stock piece the Vandoren V16 A5 hard rubber piece was a good one with a decent finish that seems to be fairly consistent, had a nice jazz like sound. nothing will beat the original vintage meyers though, especially the old Meyer Bro's & the early NY USA pieces IMO if they are in good condition. some pieces come close though.....again IMO. for the money (what...about $125?) I think it's a decent piece, better than some. you can probably get a good/better deal on one on ebay every now & then. I don't much care for em (the rubber ones) on tenor though.....prefer a good link.
