I'm fine with using it I am just not fine with switching between notes that do use the octave key and notes that don't. Some notes I have no problem switching between but like high d to low g = really messed up. Can I tongue it to aleviate that or is that just a bad habit?

You can tongue, but you should be able to slur them too. Practice slow and while doing, pay attention to a constant airstream, no change in embouchure and a coordinated movement of your fingers.

And if you're not sure about your horn, get it checked. Leaks make it all a lot more difficult.
