I'm a long-time amateur woodwind player and only recently realized I should have been playing tenor sax all my life ... I had a bass clarinet and have some really nice reeds left over. I tried them on the tenor and they seemed OK to me. But, being a sax beginner who is still self-teaching, I would like to get someone's more experienced opinion. Thanks.

Generally, folks use Bass Clarinet reeds as a stand-in for C Melody reeds, since a variety of those are hard to find....as opposed to using BC reeds on a Tenor.

But....if you have tried both Tenor and BC reeds....and the latter works well for you as far as tone, intonation, and blowability....go for it....

I thought that Bass Clarinet reeds get softer than Tenor Reeds.
A bass clarinet I used for a week of practice became really thin, but it took one of my tenor reeds around 5 weeks.
It might depend on the reed condition, but I used 2 Bass clarinet reeds and I thought they both got soft pretty fast.

The bass clarinet player in our band uses only tenor sax reeds!! As a result of this thread, I borrowed a bass clarinet reed off her and put it on my tenor Selmer Soloist with an Fl lig and..............it was great !!! I was very surprised how good it felt and sounded. Looking at them side by side the bass clarinet reed vamp looks a little longer and deeper, but otherwise they're almost indistinguishable. I don't hink I'll be changing from my tried and very very trusted Gonzalez 2¾ tenor reeds though !!!
