I built up a baffle on a 105/2 and used the thing for over 10 years. I think the raspy sound you describe is a brighter sound. You can experiment with different configurations easily with the tape.

I have a berg, 105/2, it's fine but I decided to have a play for fun. I took some electrical tape and stuck in inside on the baffle bit, raising it up.
Now the sound is more 'raspy', I guess from distrupting the air flow? neone ever done that?
