True Tone Alto Neck Question

Did any of the True Tones come with the 01 necks, or were those just on the Aristocrats which came later?

AIUI, the 01, ** (double star) and 3 necks came in with the New Aristocrat altos in 1931, and 01 was the sole survivor when the left-bell-keyed Aristocrats came out in 1934.

I forget whether anybody has found any obvious changes among the 1, 01, or the * (single star) neck used on the late True-Tone altos.

There's been a good bit of discussion on the Forum over the years, little of it conclusive. Check out this discussion. Or this one. Or search neck in thread titles in the Buescher forum.

Keep in mind that Buescher apparently didn't even advertise that different necks were available for the New Crats. It might have been a kind of open trade secret, only for the sales force or maybe even the factory staff.

You wouldn't by chance still have the serial numbers or the years those True Tones were made, would you?

Pretty pricey to consider purchasing but a pretty early serial number and a neck marked with the "1".

Thanks Juan for your offer to help. I would prefer a chart of measurements of a #01 neck. As a Buescher expert, I am sure that you have kept such detailed records over the years.

Internal or external? Do you have telescoping bore gage sets? How we can normalize at wich points you need what measure?

Saxquest is selling a 2603xx gold T-T with the ** neck.
This thread mentions a 2599xx silver T-T with the ** neck.

These would date to very late 1930 or early '31. The first New Aristocrats were 263xxx (late 1931).

I have one 01 aristo neck, one * and one 1 true tone necks at this time at the shop. I can measure and all, however, I feel like this warning should be posted: you're not likely to have success working "backwards". As Grumps mentioned, his 01 neck played fine with his horn but played not so nice on another horn of about the same era. More often than you'd think, there's more to tuning a neck for a certain horn than the other way around

Why don't you send me the measures on the horn that you have issues with and a detailed description of the intonation quirks (MPC make, model, tip opening, all data that you can include can help me replicate your test condition and be more accurate on my recommendations) plus you mentioned you tested it with the BA neck, please compare that one with the buescher neck.

Thanks, but no thanks. If you don't have the measurements indicating the taper of the #01 neck then why don't you just say so instead of beating around the bush.

I have them. Do you? My repaired neck horns don't get returned, and I sign my pulldown repairs/retapers. Serial number of the horn and my initials. I don't push them as "original plating" or other deceiving sales pitches.
