I have recently been posting a lot of pop covers, and I know the the jazz police are coming after me, so I've done some penance and recorded this old, somewhat obscure favorite jazz standard of mine by Oscar Pettiford called TRICOTISM in an attempt to get back in their good graces. Enjoy.

Oh yes! Very nice version, Larry, I dig both your phrasing and your lines on it. What gear are you on at the moment? I sold the Viking again that I got from you a couple of years ago.
I've been in the same state of (practicing) mind the last weeks, also doing some classic pop and Tricotism in between. Here's my version:

Great job man, penance served. Great tune as well. I know it from the Lucky Thompson album of the same name. I believe Pettiford is also the base player on it.
Thanks very much RMVouty!

I'd be more worried about the pop police.
LOL thanks for checking it out.

No doubt about that!
Larry, sounds great as always.
Thanks Mark!

Sounds great Larry. I like your phrasing.
Thanks I'll take the compliment Thomas!

Jo, I am a little jealous, you have more of a modern thing happening in your take. I was fooling around with more post bop concepts but I decided to keep it more old-school flavor. I am going to post another version with more modern ideas, more intervallic and chromatic, which is another side of my musical personality.
Somewhat beat up Keilwerth Bundy Special serial # 54,xxx, this horn needs work... But I really love it. Fantastic instrument. Vintage Brilhart Hard Rubber 5 set up by Norbert Stachel at .100" A true holy grail mouthpiece. I have probably put 3000 hours on this piece. I am going to have Norbert clean it up soon and restore the tip. I have worn it out!
1980s LaVoz Hard which I sanded down a bit, and an old standard vintage metal ligature.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks, I appreciate that, but I honestly haven't checked any post bop concepts for years, just did some Pettiford/Thompson transcription years ago. I'm looking forward to your next version when you're into that concepts, the later post bop era is one if my favorites for sure! Great to hear about your setup, quite encouraging for everybody that it obviously doesn't have to be the most popular/expensive horn or vintage stuff all the time to get a decent sound.

I'm done with expensive vintage Selmers for now. Especially down here in Costa Rica better not to attract so much attention with super expensive equipment. I enjoy find cheap deals on used horns... These old Keilwerths are fantastic and you can find them dirt cheap too. They are incredibly well made, tune up beautifully, SUPER lightweight, there is no ribbing, no high F#, no big heavy clunky keywork like on my Taiwanese horns, the ergonomics are the BEST of any tenor I have found bar none. The rolled tone holes are elegant and beautiful, the plastic pants guard is cool funky retro style. I think I paid $700 for this tenor then put like $150 to put it in playing condition. Pads are ok with plastic resos. There are still some things I need to do to this tenor. I sold my 86,xxx Mk Vl about 5 years ago for a big pile of cash. I just naturally gravitated away from it, and now I have a whole closet full of excellent and cheap tenors that I enjoy just as much... A few of these old Keilwerths, and I have 3 Taiwanese tenors including a 1st. generation P. Mauriat 76 gold lacquer which is incredibly good, a P. Mauriat 66rcl cognac laquer, and a TK Melody Ipanema tenor that I also dearly love. Also I just picked up an early 1950s Buffet Dyanction for a little over $1000 in gorgeous condition on Ebay that I'm going to OH. Way better than the Super Dynactions IMO, which are just way too dark and tubby. I have a friend one that and that tenor is an absolute monster player. Last time I tried it I couldn't put the thing down... The Viking was very nice but...

I'm going to do a "Tricotism Uncesored" version...

Awesome - Your flow of ideas is seamless. Thanks for sharing. I think the Jazz Police with be OK with this take. :)
Thanks very much!!

I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!!

Liked that one a lot Larry, very nice idea's and a good sound (same goes for Jo's version!).
Thanks Peter. Jo is quite a monster!
