I just came back from a four-week holiday to Australia. It was too long to be without a sax, so I decided to take mine along.
I packed my tenor Keilwerth in its original rectangular (styrofoam and nylon) case. Because of the case's size, I wasn't allowed to hand-carry it onto the plane. Instead, it went through normal baggage handling with a "fragile" sticker. I'm back now, and my sax seems to be okay, though I wouldn't do this again.
Next time I fly with my sax, I'll get a contoured case that I hopefully can carry into the plane's cabin. The original Keilwerth case looks too much like ordinary luggage for airline staff to consider it as anything else.
