Transcribing

I've finally seen the light on the need to transcribe. My playing has been stagnant for a while so I made a start on something last night. I've begun working on Blue Lester, for it's simplicity there are some really nice lines in there!

I was wondering if you feel the need to write out the part or is learning it by ear enough? How do you go about it? Do you skip the head or learn that by ear or by sheet?

I like to transcribe the head when I have time, it helps me analyze how you can play around the melody and the kind of embellishments you can use. I also like to write everything down, although it is very hard work and takes a lot of time, because if I don't I tend to forget the transcription when I start working on the next one. My personal goal is to do one transcription per month and learn as much form it as I can in that period.
